The
Los Angeles Times recently caught up with Dan Aykroyd who confirmed that
Ghostbusters 3 is in development at Columbia Pictures and may start filming in the winter:
Aykroyd said Sigourney Weaver is on board now, as are the original squad of ectoplasmic specialists -- Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson. Murray's presence was the pivot point in making a third film happen.
"We could be in production by winter."
The script is by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the writing team behind the upcoming Jack Black/Michael Cera movie
Year One (directed by Ramis), and Aykroyd is enthused about its premise of a new generation of Ghostbusters taking over the duties of the aging team. Aykroyd said he wishes Ivan Reitman would return to direct the third film in the series but that he's "too busy as a mega-producer" to take it on; his second choice is Ramis, who, of course, co-wrote the first two
Ghostbusters films with Aykroyd and has numerous directing credits, most notably
Groundhog Day and
Analyze This. "He has a lot of things going on, but it would be wonderful to see him do it."
The details of story are still in play, but Aykroyd said he's hoping for a five-member "new generation" team with several female members. "I'd like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let's revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let's pass it on to a new generation."

And honestly, I'm surprised at the dudes here at Movieweb saying they don't want chicks with proton packs. I'm actually doing a double take at the computer screen and asking, "So you think it would be any different than a bikini chick with a gun?!" LOLOLOLOL XD BRING ON TEH LADIEZ!!! LOLOLOL I'm just messing with you guys XD
New generation would be good, 1 girl would be enough. The old timers should just be mentors only.
I don't want them to pass the torch.
I don't want girls as Ghostbusters.
Handling a proton pack is a man's job.
It's cool to go old school.
What about Rachel McAdams?
Not too keen on the girls they've picked as their hopefuls however, Alyssa Milano and Eliza Dushku really?!! They both suck in pretty much everything they have ever done, lets hope it is just a rumor! But I guess if they get three great male leads it might make up for it!
I think Harold Ramis should totally direct this! He's the perfect choice if Reitman is busy. Maybe he can swing Jack Black over into the new movie. Like I said before, going with some of Judd Apatow's buddies would be the right direction; Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, etc.
Handing the reigns over to a new generation is a great idea. I don't think a movie where the original cast drove the story would work now. Only because those guys are a bit older (and I say that with respect).
Unless the is bad, there's every reason to think this could be great. Yes, a reboot that would actually be GOOD! That is aside from "Batman Begins". The Aykroyd/Ramis factor should be the framework with the Apatow sensibility driving the comedy. Or at least that type of comedy.
So awesome that everyone's coming back, INCLUDING Murray AND Weaver!
I rather you get slimer back than some broad with a proton stick
(well maybe mines personally)
I wonder who some of these new Busters are going to be? I think Tracy Morgan would make one hilarious addition to the team.
