Sony Signs Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man 4 & 5
September 5th, 2008

According to the report, the studio is looking to film both films at the same time both for reasons of cost effectiveness and because "it wasn't so easy to get everybody back together."
And just who is 'everybody'? Well, it includes Maguire and Raimi. And it's almost a certainty that Kirsten Dunst will be back as well. According to the report Dunst's Mary Jane Watson will be featured, and Sony would "never recast her."
The script for the film was written by Jamie Vanderbilt, and so far the studio is being tight-lipped about the villain and who might play the character. However insiders say that "once you find out who the villain is, you'll know who is playing it." One thing that is certain however is that it won't be a return of Venom. Spider-Man 4 will not follow the trend of The Dark Knight and "going dark".
Principal photography for Spider-Man 4 begins in the fall of 2009.
On a similar note, while the symbiotic alien costume won't be appearing in Spider-Man 4, Sony has hired screenwriters to begin work on a spin-off Venom film. No word yet on whether or not Topher Grace would return for the starring role.

As for my guess on the villian, I would put money on the Lizard. Dylan Baker has already been cast in Spider man 2 & 3 as Dr. Curt Connors, so that would make sence of the hint, "once you find out who the villain is, you'll know who is playing it."
I'm in full agreement that just because The Dark Knight brought in $500 million in the US does not mean every comic book movie should be darker. Wolverine should be dark because it fits his personality. Spider-Man has no business being that dark, the darkest it should get is with Venom and even that doesn't need to be dark on the level of The Dark Knight.
Well we will have plenty of time to speculate about who will be the villain other than The Lizard, and as long as it is not the Vulture I'll be more than happy. I think it would be more of a shock if The Lizard turned out not to be in than anything.
"4" will be its own movie. The comparisons to "3" have no real validity. And if you stop and think about it, each film in the series had its own unique style to it. We as fans may have trashed "3" but it still had its entertainment value and stylized look. Some people liked Sandman, some didn't. Some liked the tying up of loose ends with Harry's character, others did not. And mostly everyone hated the Venom portrayal, even though his origin and development was faithful to the comics.
We can only look to the future of the franchise, and quit our whiny bullshit of comparing it to past projects. Like someone earlier said, Spider-Man 4 won't suck as bad as Spider-Man 3. In complete agreement!
you, vis and mb123 hit the nail on the head.
now if only we could get one of u to replace b. alan orange as the writer of the boos and whoop-doos. :]
once a character, always a character!!
Spiderman, Superman, Wonderwoman... all these other superheroes are not dark... so you simply can't go that direction. Even though most of us hate Spiderman 3, it still made a shitload of money ($336 million domesticall ranking 16th all-time). And if you stop and think about it.... it DID try to go dark with the whole evil Peter Parker shit... and it didn't work for us. NO dark Spiderman will be fine.
Now Wolverine on the other hand.... now HE could be dark. It just works with some characters and with others... it simply won't.
Just because a film's not "dark" doesn't mean it's not good. I enjoy dark films, but you can't have dark without some light. That's your invitation to broaden your horizons a little :)
Sony knows that 3 was a setback, so it's good to have the same team come back for more, as not to make the same mistakes again. I highly doubt 4 will suck as bad as 3.
this shit is stupid
Also, Sony has already announced that they dropped the villain count down to TWO - that's TWO - for the next one. So, it's any guess as to who the [main] villain will be, as I agree The Lizard cannot be the sole villain to carry the entire movie, but his character is important enough to be in there.
All I know is that Sam Raimi relinquished creative control of story when James Vanderbilt took over for David Koepp when he was brought on board. And Vanderbilt has written "Spider-Man 4" and "Spider-Man 5," so as far as villains go, there may be build up's in the next one leading to "5." They will be filming these next 2 films consecutively, like the first 2 Superman's were, and thank God they are out of Raimi's control of story. That fact could actually save the rep of this franchise.
Here's hoping for Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat in "Spider-Man 5."
