Sony Signs Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man 4 & 5

Source:  Deadline Hollywood
Movie PictureSpeculation about who might be replacing Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man's webbed costume can now come to an end. Both Maguire and director Sam Raimi will be returning for Spider-Man 4, according to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood, and they may be set to return for Spider-Man 5 as well.

According to the report, the studio is looking to film both films at the same time both for reasons of cost effectiveness and because "it wasn't so easy to get everybody back together."

And just who is 'everybody'? Well, it includes Maguire and Raimi. And it's almost a certainty that Kirsten Dunst will be back as well. According to the report Dunst's Mary Jane Watson will be featured, and Sony would "never recast her."

The script for the film was written by Jamie Vanderbilt, and so far the studio is being tight-lipped about the villain and who might play the character. However insiders say that "once you find out who the villain is, you'll know who is playing it." One thing that is certain however is that it won't be a return of Venom. Spider-Man 4 will not follow the trend of The Dark Knight and "going dark".

Principal photography for Spider-Man 4 begins in the fall of 2009.
On a similar note, while the symbiotic alien costume won't be appearing in Spider-Man 4, Sony has hired screenwriters to begin work on a spin-off Venom film. No word yet on whether or not Topher Grace would return for the starring role.

your right i dont think spiderman is bound to the kiddy world, i would love to see a dark in toned movie for a carnage fight.
i hope the dark approach aint gonna be the next tool the film makers will use to ressurect old frantises

Book, the animated film Gotham Knight in no way even connected Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. WB just said it did and like suckers every one flocked to that shit and before you knew it the DVD was flying off store shelves the same day it came in. Just a promotional tool.

I hear what you're saying, though. I've always felt that Spider-Man needs to exist in the PG-13 animated world. With the flood of DC animated movies, you'd think Marvel would get on the ball with it. Their only official releases are Iron Man and Dr. Strange. Not two big sellers, if you want MO. I have been waiting for a true-to-the-comic Spider-Man since I heard of Marvel Animated Features. I'm sick of them basing it in this "children's world" shit. The comic book was never like that. Let's see Gwen Stacy's death, Spidey & Black Cat's sexual relationship (not literally), or Carnage slaughtering people. Now THERE'S a good Spider-Man. Not this cheezy Raimi kids theater shit. Although I love the visual styles of the films, don't get me wrong, but every media has messed up Spidey's story somehow. Let's see one that is true to his book.

An animated film between 3 and 4 would be alright, but if they did it, I'd rather see one between 4 and 5.

I wonder how much cash was in the dumptruck that backed up to their houses to get them back on board?

I wish theyd make an animated film to connect films 3 and 4. They did it for TDK and theyre doing it for Transformers. I dont know if itd help them tell a better story but maybe thats what they need. Plus I just wanna another spider man movie to watch ASAP.

Leo,I like your idea. Pretty cool sounding, but then Lizard would have to be full on crazy to even try and stop Carnage. And carnage will have to continue to the next one, while Conner dies in the 4th with all his research on Carnage and a possible anti virus being left to Spidey, so that in the 5th one, they can have an all out rumble of the century, with a beginning cameo role of Rhino in the 5th.

agreed crazy thats how i would do it have lizard and shocker in 4 then 5 have carnage to make up for how venom was used in 3. and i agree it should go dark with carnage bring on ben foster.

Spider-Man 4 will not follow the trend of The Dark Knight and "going dark". Big mistake, what do they think making it Dark will make it worse, lol if anything will make it watchable

Well that tells me this is going to be crap.. Please guys Spidy 1 - 2 - 3 where just terrible...

God why me..

and Toby Maguire, not even saying anything..

Like I need too

Even though Tobey could have been better, it would have been dumb to change now.

Fuck Carnage leave carnage open for the fifth movie bring on Lizard and the Shocker!!!

September 10th, 2008 4:23pm
What they could do is have Carnage come from the sample that Dr. Connors still has, so he becomes the Lizard to try and stop Carnage because he blames himself for the symbiote's escape, but when he turns into the Lizard he loses his mind and Spidey has to stop both of them.

Just an idea. LOL

Id want the secondnary villian to need something from Dr Connors, like his technology, threaten his family and maybe push him to become the lizard again (say afer he deals with becoming the lizard once before and spider-man helping him change back) but that makes me think of the Scorpion which i dont wanna see in the next film

Great news. Love the Spiderman movies. No need for it to be dark. Just improve on the third one and make it more like the 2nd one.

i really want carnage in this one, i think its because i really wanna see a symbonite villian look and fight good, we all know connors has the rock so a lizard and carnage film will redeem the movies to me and would make sense.
why give a movie to a guy who doesnt like the fan faverate villan...venom???.
regardless of my rant i hope this film is good who ever the villan is

Well Cap'n FL, i just couldn't help that they were trying to portray jack black as a Mexican. This is humorous to me and above all, a guilty pleasure. Just like spidey 3 is for you. Because that movie was/is a piece of shit. They should have put a warning label on it that says, 'this movie sucks more dick then Jenna Jameson at a Duke Frat party'. That would have saved us all about $8 domestic.

I agree with CBF, just a horrible choice for Venom/Eddie Brock though.
That means the villain is Zach Braff as Carnage. Has to be, Z-Braff was born for the role and is due. I would love to see camera angles of a CGI Rhino breaking the crap out of NY buildings and police cars!

finally someone other than me alone liked 3!! thank you Cryptkeeper. and Marc, Nacho Libre was a fucking waste of film and hours of my life. they should have put a label :Warning watch shitty movie at own risk! damn, that would have been very helpful. Lmao

Yes, it WAS Raimi's fault. Notice I said nothing about his directing talent, that has nothing to do with it. It was his writing that messed her character up. Just like it was the writing that required Tobey Maguire to cry like a pussy in 3. The inclusion of David Koepp in 1 and Michael Chabon in 2 made it to where those didn't suck as bad, but 3 was largely Raimi's handling of characters. Yes, Dunst's MJ CAN be salvaged. Whether you want to believe it or not. James Vanderbilt is the new writer and he brings with him knowledge of character-driven themes and development. If anyone can fix the character, it's him.

Toby Maguire...pass
Sam Raimi...DO NOT PASS!

They better make up for that last crappy ass movie they came out with. The 3rd one was the worst of them all! MAKE UP for it or scrap the fuckin idea. No love stories in this one please!!!

i'm over spiderman, and toby maguire can lick the ball-sweat out of my boxer's.

i like sam raimi since way back but i think to call him "phenomenal" as a director is a bit much. have you ever seen "the quick and the dead"? not exactly what one might expect from a phenomenon, it was easily the shittiest cowboy movie i've ever seen. even the 5-star cast couldn't save that awful waste of time.
