McG and Christian Bale Had to Rewrite Terminator Salvation

Source:  The Hollywood Reporter
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Christian Bale, who director McG had to convince to be in Terminator Salvation, ended up having to work with the director to rewrite the screenplay in order to accommodate the actor's burgeoning stardom.

Initially, McG wanted Bale to the play the role of Marcus Wright in the film. However Bale wanted to play the role of John Connor who had been a central character in the other Terminator movies. In the original drafts of Terminator Salvation Connor's role was smaller.

The director reports that he and Bale "worked day and night" to rewrite the screenplay with Bale.

"A lot of the work was integrating (Connor) into scenes ... and having that feel integral and sensible, as opposed to grafted on just because there was a star in the part," stated John Brancato, the Terminator Salvation screenwriter.

Initially the character of Marcus Wright (played in the film by Sam Worthington) was an executed man who lends his body to science, and comes back to life when machines take over the world.

In the current film, both Wright and Connor get equal time on screen.

Terminator Salvation comes to theaters May 21 from Warner Bros. Pictures.

I think it's pretty evident, in the final film, that they had to tact on stuff for Connor to do. Too bad, really...

Old news, knew this from time.

About they wanted him to play Marcus Wright, but Bale told them "No, but if you want me, i'll play John Connor' and that Bale didn;'t like the fact that John Connors role was so small, so they made his character a bigger role. But initially Marcus is the main character

this reminds me of NORTON co writing the HULK script and NOT being credit for it(on screen)
An actor does this so as NOT to bring focus to the aspect of him writing, and keep the emphasis on STORY!

BALE has done the same thing. He was offered the 'title' role of THE TERMINATOR, but turned it down for the sake of improving the movie!
When has he been part of some mediocore shit? even if a movie of his was bad...it cannot be called 'generic'!

At least this goes to show that the time on screen isn't what matters to him. He was after all offered the staring role as Marcus (before Connor was the main character) and turned it down in order to bring the story in deeper by making Connor a more importatnt part. I know some actors would do this kind of thing for there ego, I'm just glad that at least one actor out there cares about the craft of his work and not the importance of his screentime.

Bale is just one of those guys that you have to do certain things for, as far as re-writting the script for him to play connor was a good move on his behalf and im sure Mcg is not thinking they did the wrong thing either, besides if it wouldve been that u just here connor's voice here and there over a walkie or transmitting something i would have been pissed im glad he took the role of John and made it what it was supiased to be i agree with illuminati he cares about the role and the story.

Bale should have been Marcus. He appears to be more intriguing than Connor atm. I guess because Marcus is this terminator with a conscience. Perhaps Connor will eventually become something like that too...

How would you have a Terminator movie set post Judgement Day and not have John Connor as the main character? The story of the whole franchise is based around that him.

if BALE doesn't get writing credit on this i think that speaks alot about his 'ego'.
i doubt very much BALE cares about screen time, he's getting paid the agreed price. I believe he cares about the CHARACTER and STORY, and i'm glad to hear they did this!

Looking forward to the film very much!

Well offcourse we have to see the John Connor character around driving people as much as possible, i mean if they pull some shit where he was barley in the movie it would suck, so i applaud Bale on this.

Sounds like McG had to rewrite the script around Bales ego. Oh well, looks fucking awesome either way, and Ill be there on the 21st.
