Maria Bello to Replace Rachel Weisz in The Mummy 3

Source:  Variety
Maria Bello will replace Rachel Weisz in the third installment of The Mummy, according to Variety.

She joins Brendan Fraser, Luke Ford, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh in the Rob Cohen-directed film for Universal Pictures.

Bello will play Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell, the adventuress played in the first two films by Weisz. After Weisz declined to reprise, Cohen and the studio cast a wide net for a replacement.

Written by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, The Mummy 3 brings the O'Connells and their full-grown son (Ford) to the forbidden tombs of China and the Himalayas, where they battle a shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor (Li) cursed by a wizard (Yeoh).

The film is expected to be released in the summer of 2008.

rachel weisz is better than anyone to be the character of evy. the mummy will not be the same like the previous movies without her.

OMG!!!! I can't believe that Weisz DECLINED to do this rather than cuz of conflicting schedules!!!!!! Like her career is going anywhere!!!! I haven't seen her in maybe but 1 or 2 small films since then. Neither of which I can remember the titles. Sure, she may have done some stage-plays during that time as a lot of small time actors do, but COME ON! Isn't this just pushing it a bit?

And I forgot that Sonnenfeld wasn't returning for this movie. Will someone fill me in on this Rob Cohen guy please? I don't know what else he's done. And yes, I know the answer is probably just a click away, but my PC is too outdated and slow to bother tracking it down rather than just asking here on a page that'll have already been uploaded once.

Please tell me Rachel didn't want to do the role because of actress concious, and not money. Maria is a great actress in her own right, but Evy is not the same without Rachel.

I am highly disappointed and irritated over this. Bello may be a good actress, but she's no Evy. No one can replace Weisz in that role. The movie is only half as good without her, if even that.

me too.. i don't think it will be that good if one of the main character was replaced.. original is still the best!!!.. brendan fraser and rachel weisz has a good chemistry, they look good together... and that is one of the factor why the previous sequel of this movie is a blockbuster film...

I also don't think it's going to work well without Rachel. Unless they go amongst a different story-line.
