Lawrence Kasdan to Write Robotech

Source:  CHUD
Movie PictureLawrence Kasdan, the noted screenwriter behind Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders Of The Lost Ark, has just had his name attached to Robotech. According to CHUD, Kasdan will be the new writer for the adaptation of the American cartoon based on three Japanes anime series.

The original cartoon of Robotech tells the story of a future Earth which comes under a series of alien invasions, and uses that alien technology to create transforming vehicles to fight back. The American series drew from three unconnected Japanese series, but somehow managed to make them into a coherent storyline.

Robotech is set to be developed by Tobey Maguire's Maguire Entertainment for Warner Brothers.

The (sort of)very short answer is that in Japan there was a huge rage over Macross in the early 80's. Gundam was another huge success amongst others even a bit earlier. Due to Harmony Gold's import and reworking of Macross for American audiences, Macross made pretty big inroads into the US as wellas Robotech. Soon after the Japanese produced Transformers initially for American audiences (although they also reworked it a bit for Japanese release, sort of a reverse of the Macross/Robotech process). Transformers is much more episodic and 'robot' focused. Macross was more arc driven and character focused (ala BSG or B5 and the like).
