Marcus Nispel Signs on to Direct Conan

Source:  CHUD
Marcus Nispel set to direct Conan We reported last month that director Brett Ratner was no longer going to be at the helm of the new Conan remake, but now it seems a new director has been found. According to CHUD, Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th) will be directing Conan.

It was said that an August start date was set when Ratner was on board, but it's not clear if they still aim to get the film rolling by then, especially since no cast members have been attached as of yet. The site did also report that a casting announcement was expected soon, and that the title role was expected to go to an unknown actor.

Nispel seems like an ideal choice here after the success of the Friday the 13th remake... but an unknown actor as Conan? While the thought of an unknown stepping into such huge, Governator shoes, the more I think about it... who really has the build in Hollywood to pull off Conan these days? Derek Mears the Barbarian, perhaps?....

LOTRs was a great exception to the fantasy genre, Peter Jackson was the visionary who saw how to bring the books to life.

Hollywood still doesn't know how to make a good fantasty/action film. They will not make this too deep or serious. The studios will try to make this a superhero film and it will fail!

I read that's it's going to be based on the original source material, so yes lol

My expectations have been lowered, though, because I do not believe this guy can give us an epic Conan movie

Vis, i just got one question.
Do you actually believe that this CONAN is going to be based and sourced around the original source material.

I'm getting the feeling it won't be based around the books, i'm spectating they will probably follow the comic stories.

Marcus Nispel create a good Conan, lol, highly unlikely, best cast role for Conan is Roland Kickinger

People are assuming it's "just" a remake because the original films are so popular. People are in denial. Hell, I might be in denial now...I don't think this guy has the chops to do an epic Conan movie, but we'll see

I read an article on mania that it was going to be a remake.

That's really funny, I guess you never read the old comics but I do agree with you that the stories sucked and I did get your point.

"who cares, it's still batman" haha Wow, this isn't a Batman thread, but you're gonna make it one in a moment with that ridiculous comment and the fact that the point of MY last comment seemed to fly over ur head.

The point ears isn't just what makes Batman Batman...I'll let you process that so I don't have to go on(hint: the story is what makes batman who he is. if the story sucks, like forever and batman and robin, then it's not batman, just a sucky attempt at a batman story).

As for Conan, it WON'T be a remake. They're not remaking the original movie, they're following the original stories more closely, at least that's what I've read and hope they do. Just like Batman Begins followed the comics more closely than Burton or Schumacher

Agent VIS I'm a big fan of Batman, I own most of the films except for Batman Forever. Some of the films may suck but who cares, it's still Batman. I don't agree with putting in Robin in the earlier films but the newer films are much better.
I like Superheroes of all sorts, except for Superman he pretends to be a human and has a heart of gold. How can anyone like the super freak? Only three actors have done a great job, except for the look a like.
As for this film series it shouldn't be a remake at all, it should be with a new body builder that is continuing the adventures of the character.

This can not be a remake. Since Conan was such a hug story line, this can and should be simply a conituation of Conan with the other two remaining as his past, and a new story of his future as it were be the new film. But having a unknown is to risky for a Conan. But there realy isnt to many big muscle bound actors like Arnold and Sly these days to fill the shoes, so a unknown from body building sean might be the only way. How the finial product looks will depend on if I watch it.

Todd, did you watch Batman Begins?

Because as I recall, there were numerous Batman movies before that that didn't follow the comics.

It's a hardly a remake when they're basing it on the original stories, which the original movie did not do

Sorry not interested at all. I refuse to watch any remake unless it's from the 1930's or 40's. It can be either science fiction or horror.

I wasn't directing it just towards you Marcus. I knew people would start shitting their pants over a remake, so I wanted to post that.

Raven, Zombie has talent. The more I think about it, Halloween wasn't a horrible movie. I DID state that the only reason I brought him up was because he was rumored for it. I don't WANT him to direct it, but he'd be better than this guy.

I was shooting for Eli Roth, but whatever

Agent VIS, read my comment more carefully next time...It says in the first sentence: "This could be great..." Then my joke starts on consipracy about more often news about remakeing Arnold's movies. And I still think that new Conan could be great movie. (like I said long time ago when the first news about it came out)
P.S. Thanks for fucking up the joke instead writing your comment......or LOL.

WOOOOA VIS hold on.u wanted Rob Zombie to direct a Conan remake?!HAAA,Rob Zombie has no fucking talent,if u seen his Halloween remake you'l know and second, you're talking about exploring the original stories more?yes i hope they think straight.i loved all
of Robert E. Hward's stories of Conan, they should read the original books before they make a movie.BTW i also agree on The Fallen that James McTeigue should have directed the Conan remake,he
has more potential

Eh, I don't think Nispel is that great, but at least it's not Ratner. Then again, I don't care for a Conan remake to begin with.

Top of my head.

I'll call out Roland Kickinger for this if shooting with a kind of unknown and if mainstream, i'd vouch Sam Worthington, but with everything he has going on i see this unlikely

OOOOOOOO now i'm kinda not interested in this. I see this going to the fantasy but more horror side, since Nispel has Friday The 13th (Sucked) TCM (was good) I though Pathfinder was average but Nispel Frankenstein sucked too.

I dunno maybe its just me that sees this going more into the fantasy horror direction to wooooo in the young teens, rather than staying fantasy action adventure.
I guess only time will tell.

Also couldn't agree with VIS more the original source needs to be explored.
Also concur with fallen on Mcteigue.

Damn. I wanted James McTeigue to direct. Oh well... I hope this is good. The new Friday the 13th was crap.

And NO Triple H! For fucksake no wrestlers at all. Please.

He's a good choice, the style he used in Pathfinder would fit perfectly. I hope they take more from the source material and use an unknown actor.

June 11th, 2009 5:59pm
I agree with Agent VIS, Robert E. Howard's orginal stories need to be explored and there are toher actors that can be conan. read the books annd short stories tons of great stuff that would make excellent movies. Bring on a good unknown actor for the role.

Since the "remake hate" has already strolled in and there's bound to be more to come, I'm gonna post this now, something I've said many times before:

Do you even realize that Conan was already a pre-existing character before the movie? The movie was not written for Arnold and it wasn't even written with the original source material in mind. Shut the fuck up. Saying no one can play him after Arnold is just ridiculous when, well, there's other people that can do it, and Robert E. Howard's original stories have yet to be explored.

Even "classics" are supposedly based on pre-existing characters, but then fuck them up. Burton's Batman was a good movie, but wasn't anything close to the comics. Then Batman Begins kicked the character into high gear again. The same can happen with Conan. Nothing's written in stone just because your boyfriend the Governator starred in it. That's like saying no one can replace Christopher Reeve as Superman. Was he an amazing Superman? Yes. Are the movies(the first two) great? Yes. Are people still clamoring for a reboot(and rightly so?) YES AGAIN.

People only think hollywood has run out of ideas because it's the remakes and adaptations that get paid the most attention to...like Conan for instance. When a movie is in NEED of a reboot, don't blame Hollywood for wanting to make money off of it. The only reason the old Conan movies are so popular is because of Arnold. They didn't stay true to the stories, so get over the fact that they're "remaking" it when it's hardly a remake at all.

This could be great but......Is this some kind of sick joke in Hollywood? Something like: "Hey,you know what would be a fun thing to do? We could make a little conspiracy against Arnold Schwarzenegger! Isn't that great!? Let do it! First we start to remakeing his movies and then...We make a SF bigraphy movie about him but instead od him using steroids we give him gamma power like some Hulk shit....Oh! Or even better...We make him age backwords and at the end of the movie we put him in the kindergarden. OMG! Isn't this a brilliant idea ever??? And the best part is that he can't do anything about it becouse he is too busy being guverner of California and we don't really need him for it becouse we will use CGI of him!"
LOL........I wouldn't be surprised if this what I just said turns out to be true. Sad but true. :)

meh

Rob Zombie would have been better. He was rumored for it a while ago, that's the only reason I bring him up

Guess it's better than Brett Ratner
