Universal Pictures and Gore Verbinski are planning a remake of the 2006 Bong Joon-ho-directed Korean thriller
The Host, and has set Fredrik Bond to make his feature directorial debut and Mark Poirier (
Smart People) to write the script.
According to
Variety, the story follows a town terrorized by a giant mutant squidlike creature hatched by toxins that flow into a nearby river from a military base. When the creature grabs a little girl, her dysfunctional family must band together to rescue her.
Verbinski will produce with Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison, along with Paul Brooks.
The film, originally titled
Gwoemul, did record-breaking business in its theatrical run in South Korea.
Bond has directed commercial campaigns for Nike, Adidas and Levi's. He and Verbinski had been looking for a project to do together, and Bond said he embraced the opportunity to mix a larger-than-life monster with a heartfelt family drama.
No production date has been set.

because it made more money?
or because it was so gay?
don't get me wrong, the monster was awesome but the story and the characters were mind-numbingly lame... in my opinion.
try to break your thoughts up into individual sentences next time, buddy.
high five.
the host came out before cloverfield though, and had a better story and a more believable monster. and no teeny bopper "wheres my girlffriend" bullshit or irratic nausea-inducing camera work.
the original is freaking great, in my opinion, despite its off-kilter pacing. the monster was awesome.
that scene, for instance, where you first see the fish monster in all its glory, running up the shore knocking people over was just fantastic.
i don't have much faith in verbinski though, his work has been sort of hit or miss with me.
Original is already too Kool... dont try to mess up with that. I really like that movie for strong emotions with splendid CG...
It hought this movie got a lot of exposure? Why isn't this story titled--Americans to remake one-year-old So. Korean monster pic.
