According to Video Business, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was on pace to reach the mark of 6 million units in first-day sales set by the franchise's last installment, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, said sources.

Sources estimated about 4.5 million units moved via sell-through and 1.5 million through rental channels. But Warner Home Video, which shipped more than 15 million units of Azkaban, declined comment.

With the busiest shopping weekend of the year on the horizon, the numbers could fall roughly in line with DreamWorks Home Entertainment's Shrek 2, which sold a healthy 12.1 million units during its first three days. Buena Vista Home Entertainment's Finding Nemo holds the first-day DVD sales record at 8 million units.

Meanwhile, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment is clearly expecting its Nov. 23 Seinfeld titles to master their video domain.

Sources said the studio shipped 1.5 million units of Vol. 1, featuring seasons one and two, and shipped 1.2 million units of Vol. 2, containing season three. Typically, 1 million units of a TV on DVD title need to sell for it to qualify for blue chip status.
CTHE, which soon changes to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, had no comment about consumer interest. Others were vocal, however.

Fred Fox, TransWorld Entertainment's executive VP merchandising, marketing and inventory management, called first day sales for both Potter and Seinfeld "phenomenal."
