Paramount's Early DVD Releases Anger Theater Owners

Source:  The Hollywood Reporter
While fans may be happy that they don't have to wait so long for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra to hit DVD shelves, one group isn't happy at all about it: theater owners. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount's early DVD release of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra on November 3, just 88 days after its theatrical opening, received angered response from the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO).

"Our members are ballistic," National Association of Theatre Owners president John Fithian said.

Paramount's average of theatrical-to-DVD window has been 123 days, and this drastic shift has raised eyebrows at NATO. The industry average between all studios is 129 days.

"We don't know what Paramount is up to, but it's highly objectionable," Fithian added.

The article also reported that The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard was announced by Paramount for a November 10 DVD release - which is also 88 days from its theatrical opening - but, as of now, no official announcement from the studio has been made, that we could find. We'll be sure to keep you posted when news of The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard's DVD release is announced.

"G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" is now at the cheap theater here in town called: "Super Saver Cinema 8" ..all fiklms $3.00 and on Tuesdays any film $1.50 ... ...Some what I agreee whith theater owners , ...I remember in the 80's when it took almost a year from the date of a films release for a film to finally come to video ....then sometimes another year to buy it after that...

Today you can either pay money to see the film in a theater ...Or wait 2-3 months down the road and the film that you wanted to see in theaters will end up at the $1.00 Redbox for rental!!!

they're trying to cash in on the hype while it's still there. the movie wasnt that good so they're tyring to cash in on the dvd money before people either forget about the movie or remember that it kinda sucked and just dont want to buy it anymore.

Maybe this is a sign that studios are going to cut the old methods and just start releasing movies on DVD as soon as the level of ticket sales peter off. I'm okay with a 90-100 day gap.

The theaters have no room to complain. Movies are rarely in theaters for more than a month and a half unless they are pulling in decent sized chunks of cash. GI Joe was pretty much done after 3 weeks and with like 4 new movies coming out every week there is only so much room. I think the three theaters within my general vicinity had GI Joe for a month and a half before being pulled for the September films being opened each week. Deal with it. I like them coming out faster.

An earlier DVD release is also good to prevent some piracy.

The studio wants them out while the interest for the movie is still there. They also want them out in time for all of the holiday shopping.

I understand they are angry but what can they do?
even a few rare DVDs take over a year to be available
and I know some people find it frustrating that they have to wait so long for other DVDs
isnt that how it works: the longer a movie is in theaters the longer it takes the DVDs to come out, but the faster a movie is pulled out of theaters the faster it's DVD release will come

I like these quick releases. Fuck NATO. All studios should do this.
