I personally feel that Heath Ledger hands down won this award do to lack of a better phraise. I brilliant performance. His in dept adaptation of the character with his voice tones and body language constantly changing i thought his performance was flawless. I just feel its a shame that he did not win for his outstanding performance in Brokeback Mountain among many other great films that went unoticed. He is, not was, BUT IS TO THIS DAY a truly phenomenial actor and i just feel sorry for the man who tries to play this character in the future. Because his performence not matter how good nor convincing will never compair to the amazing, beautiful and unflinching Heath Legder's verson of the JOKER. Like i said before you shall be missed. But forever admired. A True Fan Remy

I don't even have an answer for you lol. I'm sure you wouldn't want to see a movie all in Chinese would you? Not saying the movie itself could be bad, but not really my preferrable choice of cinema viewing. Since I speak English, I stick to English speaking movies. I love British accents and their slang so you can bet your ass Snatch and Green Street Hooligans are two of my favorite movies.

I live in Australia. When I go to the cinema, lets say I have a choice of 12 current release films. Chances are 9 of them are American, one is british, one is Australian and one is foreign-language. I didn't mean to imply that American films aren't any good. Every country has their share of good and bad films. I just meant that when almost all we have to see are American-made films, of course they are what we are going to see. But I have to say that people do watch bad movies, and they do watch whatever is on at the time. The House Bunny, for example, actually did okay at the box office despite being stupid and unoriginal.

For my other comment, I was really just asking Chad & Fallen what they considered foreign films. The way they were attacking them, I wasn't sure if they were only referring to foreign-language films or just all movies made overseas.

Bragg is being annoying that's why. He clearly isn't concerned about films just posting old convo bits and spamming us.

After watching the awards and seeing Slumdog Millionare seemed to catch all of the best awards I had to see this movie for myself. I gotta tell you Slumdog Millionare was in my opinion one of the best movies that I had seen in a long time. It combined the life and death struggle of two young men, a love story and a pot of gold ending all in one. I thought it was very riveting. If you get the opportunity to watch this movie do so as it will not dissapoint.

'American films suck major ass too. Their plots are too predictable, with an over-emphasis on violence. It's like you're all lost in some Roman wilderness of pain where all the overgrown children are insane.' So what you are trying to say miss kayti is everyone all over the globe are just watching American made movies just because they do not have anything else to watch. I think I give people a little more credit than that. If American made movies were that bad, no one would see them.

As far as foreign films are concerned, I think we are smart enough to know that just because it is an English speaking film does not mean it is American made. For example, Slumdog Millionaire is a foreign film because it is a British made film. In my opinion the thing that makes a film foreign or American is who paid for the film to be made. There are alot of American films that are made outside of America and vice versa.

    3 years agoby @shelleyFlag

  10. miss_kayti

Shelley, I think movies do better worldwide than domestically simply because no country has the budget to make as many movies as America, so most of the movies they watch are American. It's not so much they enjoy them (although I don't mean to say that they don't) as much as they don't have anything else to watch. And Chad & Fallen, I doubt you've seen enough foreign films to really say there are more bad foreign films than American films. And do you consider only non-english speaking films foreign, or are they any film made outside America? Because Australia and England make pretty decent films. Or do you categorise 'American' to be any english-speaking films?

    3 years agoby @miss-kaytiFlag

  11. Shelley

Fallen and Chad I tried to make the same points in an earlier comment. Most American made films make more money world-wide than they do domestically so it is obvious that our films are enjoyed by everyone and every country. I do not care about insults, what irritates me is how some people typecast people into one category and then insult them as a group. People are all individuals with their own opinion and it makes no difference what country they live in or what language they speak.

  12. Chad Vital

Yeah but there are more GOOD FILMS made in American than bad ones which is my point. Look at the top grossing box office list on this website's tab. All of them are good. I could name 100 good American movies, and what maybe a few foreign ones? If you can name 20 I'll be impressed. But still, even then, the good foreign films will still be outnumbered by the good american films by a huge ratio. Sad, but true.

  13. The Narrator: The Better Man

Well Blackdog, in my experience about 80% of foreign films are garbage. And about 65% of American films are pure garbage. It just depends on the filmmaker. However you don't have to go categorizing all of America for our crummy films.

No Chad, that was not directed at you, or at anyone else here for that matter. I was just blowing off some steam. I'd love to be seventeen years old again, to do it all over so to bleat ... or would I? Hell, it must be hard to be a teenager growing up in the modern world. So many new pressures from all sides. I guess no one can blame you for escaping into movies, as we all need a good break from reality from time to time.

at the level of an America seventeen-year-old male who hasn't gone out on a date with a real live girl yet? ;-)

I hope that wasn't directed towards me cause I will put your dog down for misbehavior lol. And btw I watched half of Sean of the Dead then for some reason never watched the rest of it. It was okay. Had one funny part that I clearly remember but that's about it. I'm not into horror films anyway, I like a few.

BTW, I don't know about you, but my DVD shelves are gettin' full again. Soon it will be time to weed out the ones I know I will never watch again. I mean it's hard to keep your collection at around 100 movies or so, don't you think? Perhaps we're all too escapist these days, watching endless hours of mediocre flicks when we should really be outside soaking up the sun and breathing in the air. And then there's always the prospect of having to buy another big screen TV at over $1000.00 a pop! Where does it all end? Back at the video store where they give you chump change for your well-maintained DVDs?

Talking about foreign horror flicks, "Sean of the Dead" did a pretty good job of satirizing American zombie flicks, don't you think? Or are we all supposed to think the same; you know, at the level of an America seventeen-year-old male who hasn't gone out on a date with a real live girl yet? ;-)

Oh and I thought the trailer for Gran Torino looked good, but not worth my 8 bucks to go see in the theater. I'm sure it's a good film but not what I care to see or spend my money on. If I'm not going to go see Friday the 13th, because I'm iffy about it, I'm sure as hell not going to see Gran Torino. And yes, I don't care about Clint Eastwood at all. No offense to him or you, I just don't care about what he does.

lol wow Vis you don't like cbjunior haha. :P True that horror films in America tend to suck, but I was referring to movies that actually have chances of making it to the Oscars lol. I don't even remember the last time I saw a horror film nominated for anything. Maybe somebody else does, but I don't recall anything. Action and drama films - America wins. Horror films - Japan wins etc.
    Kids/family movies- America wins.

See you have to remember, I'm all about visual standards. If it doesn't look good, I'm not watching it. An example, Starship Troopers 2 lol. The movies like that with low production value make them look like a porno movie, with the same acting no less lol. That's why I stray away from independent and foreign films. What was that movie that was from Russia I do believe (could be wrong I can't remember things anymmore) and that looked alright from the trailers... Day Watch and Night Watch and so I watched them, despite the visual suckiness, and it was still lame. And those were foreign films. Not really horror, not sure what genre...maybe thriller? Anyway, and no offense to foreign films, but I'd rather not have to do subtitles the entire time. I did like Pans Lab. even though it had subtitles, but then again it was so dark and violent how could you not like it no matter what country you were from lol. I also liked Apocalypto (I cannot spell today my heck) which was American, but it had subtitles throughout. I stay away from subtitles, I mean it's alright if it's dialogue from another person in the movie but not the entire film. Since I live in America, I prefer English over other languages sorry.

i know its not an idea...it was a joke...and Slumdog is overrated. Benjamin Butoon or Frost/nixon deserved it.i actually disagree with all the awards Slumdog won but i dont care about the best orginal song catagory. i mean how the hell does it win cinematography. and i know for a fact that David Fincher is a better director than Danny Boyle

It has been stated below that the North American film industry is stagnant and we are all lost in some Roman wilderness of pain where all the overgrown children are insane. I beg to differ and I do not think it is polite to typecast all Americans into one category.

That being said, if the American trillion dollar film industry is so bad, then why do most American made movies make more Internationally instead of domestically. That tells me that Americans are not the only ones interested in the films made in Amercia. For example, Quantum of Solace made $572 million world-wide with only $168 (29.4%)of it domestically. Another example, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa made $580 million with only $180 (31%) domestically. I specifically picked two movies that were not based on comic book characters.

This one particular movie did not 'prick the interest of Americans', we have always been interested in foreign film. For example, Pan's Labyrinth that won three Oscar's.
