Strause Brothers Talk About Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem's R Rating

MTV recently did an interview with the Strause Brothers about their upcoming sequel Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem.

To read the entire interview,

Greg Strause said about the sequel, "The studio knew that, although the last movie made a lot of money, it didn't really resonate solidly with the fans. To get the same people back into the theater a second time, it was gonna be a bit of an uphill battle."

Added his brother Colin, "We really have to prove to the fans that this movie's gonna be very different from the last one. We wanted to [go R-rated] with it. I mean, we chest-burst a little kid!"

Greg talks about a merging of the two monsters, "The Predalien wreaks havoc and causes a different Predator ship - it's actually a Predator scout ship in this case - to crash on Earth. You see a bunch of Predators get whacked at the beginning." His brother continued, saying, "The Predalien wants to hunt and reproduce. She's got a big queen head. The main concept is that a Predalien should still be primarily Alien [with] very strong Alien features but with Predator mandibles and Predator dreadlocks. It walks a little more upright than a normal Alien does, but it also has the tail. It uses that tail quite a bit, and it's got a much bigger tail than a normal Alien."

About a sequel, Greg stated, "I'd like to do another one but I'd like to do it in space. The next one either has to be more of the bridge after this and before "Alien", or you could do something after "Aliens", We have a pretty finite ending to this, but we have a cliffhanger per se; it's a setup."

Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem opens Christmas Day, 2007.

I agree nightlight, but i think intensity can have two effects... for example the first two aliens. the first one is intense in merely suggestion, lighting, and atmosphere. It truly was for its time a suspensfull sci fi experience. The second alien was intense by action, and the idea that all was not what it always appears. going into the film you felt confident by ripleys knowledge and the fact that these marines were gonna kick serious butt. but there were plenty of twists in that film that helped with the intensity.

now back to the pg-13 and R rating comment, i agree that to fully be able to pull off a good film it doesnt have to be one or the other. hollywood on one hand likes to capture younger audiences with a pg 13 for more bang for their buck. the new die hard changed their formula too and gave live free or die hard a pg 13 but it was still a great movie and you almost forget that it is a pg 13 movie at times. So the big announcement of making this R rated is probably reassurance to win back some fans that felt it was more deserving for this type of franchise.

These people are clueless. The only problem with the first AVP wasn't that it wasn't scary enough or anything like that. The problem was it wasn't intense enough. There's a way to achieve intensity without getting an R-rating and I know that way. Giving this movie an R-rating after the first was PG-13 breaks a few rules. My point is the R-rating is a piece of crap and I have alot of friends who will backup my opinion.

hey cereal...lol... thanks for the backup my friend, good to know some people know what an opinion consists of on these forums.

first of all edge76, i never claimed to be an expert on this, it was an opinion just as yours is your opinion... that is what forums are for if you were a bit confused on that issue. the last one let me down in the way of continuity. alot of the facts established in the franchises did not hold true in this film, for example... the humans helping the predators... the predators choice of warmer climate, the chest burstors taking an average of a minute to incubate as opposed to the days in alien and alien 3.
overall the feel of the film was not there like i had for the other films. Point is... i said "I was rolling my eyes when i heard this was happening but from the trailer and the things i have heard i am looking forward to it" i am hoping they will be able to redeem themselves a bit on this one. i dont think paul anderson was the logical choice for the first film, especially coming into it claiming to be a fan. if you read more than just one posting you might see i was not the only one "letdown"

did it occur to anyone that because of these money making avp movies, James Cameron backed out of doing another aliens movie..real nice huh, i think these avp movies are as stupid as a cheesy horror flick. They are not even close to the classics alien, aliens, and predator(Arnold)...they have bad acting, and stupid plots that give us no character backgrounds like Ripley/butch(Arnold). they just have cool special effects. People, they just want your money on this bull shit, there taking famous sci-fi creatures and throwing them in a shit hole for you to see so they can bring home the big bucks...but ill see it anyway cause im a sucker like everyone else

ok, incmob, I am calling you out! How did the last film "let you down"? And what have you "heard" about the next film? Give us some facts, since you seem to the expert here!

avp was a lettdown in many ways, never fully capturing the feel of any of the last film franchises, and i think it missed the huge point. I was rollin my eyes when i heard this was happening, but from the trailer and the things i have heard i am looking forward to it. Hopefully this will breath light into a franchise that could continue and does not put out the flame on one that has just begun.
