The ACE Eddie Awards is considered an integral precursor to the Oscars. No film has won Best Picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since Ordinary People in 1981. Since the ACE membership boasts a very high crossover within its membership of Academy members, it is considered a very accurate bellwether for the eventual Oscar outcome.

@moviegeek I think what you said is probably right. Anyway, I feel the same way about its Oscar chances after seeing it.

@thedude-abides Maybe so. I'm not sure either way... But I was just saying what my assumption was on the category. I wouldn't be surprised to see TGWTDT get snubbed for any nomination except its score at the Oscars.

@moviegeek That makes sense, and in that case I would agree with the film's nomination. I suppose even though it ran over toward the end, it did transition well throughout and the execution was still near-perfect. I just always think of editing as encompassing everything that's left out as well as put in, as well as everything you mentioned.

@thedude-abides That's a directorial choice though. I thought Film Editing just recognized how well scenes worked together, how comprehensible the film was, and transitioning from plot point to plot point. Because TGWTDT worked really well as a mystery.

But yes, the ending was FAR too long. The 3-hour cut? Just a result of trying to capture little nuances that weren't really essential to the film probably.

@moviegeek I was thinking the same thing. Did you not think it was too long? Personally I would've edited about 25 minutes right out of that film and I think it would've been a better overall movie. For the life of me I can't imagine why Fincher wanted to make it 3 hours.

@thedude-abides So much for the editing in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo being horrible :P
