This Weekend's Box Office is Doom'd

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal's Doom, an R-rated sci-fi actioner based on the video game, opened in the top spot during a lukewarm weekend at the boxoffice but clearly lacked the firepower for which its namesake is known. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars in Doom, which was helmed by Andrzej Bartkowiak and opened with a disappointing estimate of $15.4 million. Not surprisingly, the audience for Doom, whose price tag was conservatively placed in the $60 million-plus area, was largely young, male and familiar with the video game.

DreamWorks' Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story crossed the finish line in the second spot with an estimated $9.3 million in its debut. The drama, starring Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning, found a large family audience and generated exceptionally strong exit-poll scores as well as mostly favorable reviews. John Gatins wrote and directed the PG-rated film about an injured race horse nursed back to health by a trainer and his daughter.

United International Pictures' Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit held on to the top spot at the international boxoffice during the weekend but faced rising competition from strong openings in various territories from Warner Bros. Pictures' Tim Burton's Corpse Bride and Buena Vista International's Flightplan.

The weekend also saw international debuts of Nanny McPhee and Doom. Wallace & Gromit grossed an estimated $15.7 million from 3,782 locations across 32 markets and saw seven openings during the period, including Belgium and Taiwan. It remained No. 1 in the U.K., grossing $8 million alone from 502 sites. Its estimated international cumulative total is now $29 million.
