In a movie with some major stars, Wild Hogs has a stand out cameo role from Kyle Gass - better known as Jack Black's other half of Tenacious D. He plays a karaoke performer at the small town where John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, and William H. Macy hang out on their motorcycle road trip across the country.
Recently, I had the chance to talk to Kyle about the role in Wild Hogs and his other projects. It was a great candid conversation just chatting with the guy; here's what he had to say:
Kyle, I first have to say, when I saw you on screen; I almost didn't recognize you, I really didn't realize it was you. I had to wait until the credits rolled to confirm I was right.
Kyle Gass: How do you think I did?
I think it was great; how did you get the part?
Kyle Gass: I don't remember; I knew Walt Disney and John Travolta. No, I there was a part for a karaoke guy and I took it.
How many songs did you do?
Kyle Gass: I did four - Genuine, Don't Cha, Milkshake, and Kiss you all over - a classic.
Which one was your favorite?
Kyle Gass: I'd have to say Don't Cha and Kiss you all over.
Of course, they had to cut you short in the movie, but are the full songs going to be on the DVD?
Kyle Gass: I don't know, they should be. It was pretty neat seeing me in the trailer, though.
That was actually my next question - how was it seeing you in the trailer compared to the Tenacious D trailer?
Kyle Gass: It was definitely different; it was such a small part, but I guess they liked it.
How long did you shoot?
Kyle Gass: Well, I was out there for three nights; they were all night shoots way out there in the desert. The first night, they didn't use me at all; I was just sitting there. The second night, they said they were going to use me; they said, 'Soon, soon.' But they never did. The third night, I was so tired of being pent up, but they finally got me up there.
So were you able to sing the songs live?
Kyle Gass: No, they pre-recorded them; that's how they usually do it. I was just lip syncing. But I guess if you couldn't tell, I did a pretty good job.
Yeah you did!
Kyle Gass: Good.
So were you able to hang out with Tim, John, Martin, and William?
Kyle Gass: No, not really they weren't there that much; but they're all great, and all very different. I got to hang out with Bill Macy the most.
Here's the real question, were you able to ride the Harley's?
Kyle Gass: Ha, no I wish. No, I didn't have that chance.
Kyle Gass: You know, I'm curious myself; it's supposed to come in the mail today.
So you don't know? Did you do commentary?
Kyle Gass: Yeah, me and Jack did the commentary for the movie; it's me and Jack ripping on the movie and each other throughout - some really good stuff.
Do you think there's going to be a sequel for the movie?
Kyle Gass: Did you see the box office?
Yeah, but I liked it.
Kyle Gass: Yeah, but America didn't agree, there was a crazy amount of work to do. We'll have to see how the DVD goes.
What about a new album?
Kyle Gass: Well, we're at the end of a cycle; we just finished the worldwide tour.
I gotta know, what's the reaction to The D in Europe and Asia?
Kyle Gass: We're actually more popular in the U.K.; they really get us, and in Australia. In the non-English speaking countries, they don't really get it.
So what about the pilots?
Kyle Gass: I'm doing this pilot called Demon; Kevin Smith is directing it. It's a comedy drama. I play a guy who rises up from Hell.
Well, you should be able to get some good advice from Dave Grohl about playing a guy from Hell. (Dave played the Devil in Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny.)
Kyle Gass: Yeah, David is an awesome Devil! He's great!
That should be a natural fit for Kevin; have you shot it yet?
Kyle Gass: No, but yeah, it should be fun.
Is acting something you wanted to get into from music?
Kyle Gass: Well, I've actually always been doing both; it's just I'm more well known for the music.
What else is going on?
Kyle Gass: Well, I finished a horror movie, Dead and Gone. It's a really good little flick. And I'm doing another film called Wieners.
Who do you play in that?
Kyle Gass: I actually play a porn director, and I have a singing break, kind of a musical interlude.
That's gotta be a blast.
Kyle Gass: It's something; it's kind of an American Pie-esque comedy. These boys crash a porn set, and in the end, they end up in the movie. Towards the end, that's when we break out in song.
Ok, final question, and back to Wild Hogs - being you were in a small town, at a town festival, was the craft services all homemade food?
Kyle Gass: No, the small town, half the people are on crystal meth. They set up all this stuff; this was a big budget movie, there were good craft services. They were some good eats!
