3D Ticket Prices to Increase This Weekend

3D theater prices are on the rise
3D theater prices are on the rise
If you're heading to the theater to watch How to Train Your Dragon this weekend, don't be surprised if you end up paying more than usual. Variety is reporting that some theaters could charge up to 26% more than the usual 3D surcharge this weekend.

It was said that the average 3D surcharge ran between $2 and $3 but some theaters could be charging $3.50 or more and, in large markets like New York and Los Angeles, the charge could be as much as $5 or more. The numbers, which came from a Wall Street media analyst, do not include extra fees for IMAX 3D.

"If consumers absorb the price increases without issue, we believe it bodes well for the pricing power of the movie exhibition industry," the report from Richard Greenfield of BTIG stated.

The report studied 10 movie theaters in various markets and of those 10 theaters, the average increase for the 3D surcharge was $1.13.

How to Train Your Dragon was awesome! Saw it in 3D with my youngest. It did not disapoint. My oldest saw Diary of a Wimpy Kid with the wife. We will be buying Dragon when it comes out for sale. But I think it will be in theaters for a while.

I think it's good news actually, maybe this will help people realize that 3D sucks and is not worth paying more and studios will finally stop releasing every single movie in 3D just to make an extra buck.

people will gripe, complain and whine... then cough up $20 each to go see these "epic" 3D movie. no thanks. for $20 i can buy the movie on bluray and watch it whenever i want.
i think i'm done going to the theater now - it has lost its magic and "experience". i hardly go anymore anyway, but i think this price hike will be the final nail in the proverbial coffin.

I talked to a friend about the increase in price and his thought on the rise in price on a animated film is ridiculous. ,....and in the poor economy where people are supposed to come 1st ...the mighty dollar prevails and profits need to made!!! .

Sorry I don;'t want to get down and dirty!!

I will skip "How to Train Your Dragon" out of protest ...my money comes by hard enough ..the $1.00 increase is gouging the customer! Esp for people collecting unemployment who enjoy going to the movies bu have to skip certain films to save a dollar!!

Why not raise the price for some sh*tty Re-make like: Piranha 3-D (2010) ..by say $5.00!!!

Total bullsh*t!!!! The economic tough times our "TOUGH" already!!!! $8.00

At least at AMC Theaters, films before 12 Noon are only $5.00, All 3-D films are $8.00, but "ONLY for "How to Train Your Dragon" it will be $9.00 so an additional $1.00 is no big deal ..... I don't understand the raise in prices!?

If Hollywood would stop the remake/sequels BS then maybe they can save $$!!!!

I'm only seeing movies that are meant to be in 3D, like Avatar and How to Train Your Dragon. I'm not even sure if I want to see the Star Wars Saga in 3D anymore.

    HAH-HAH...

This is finally where all this 3D nonsense finally faces the harsh reality of economics... and Avatar wasn't no bargain at $3 (or more) a ticket.
