Roland Emmerich begins casting
Director Roland Emmerich has made a name for himself for his disaster films and now he's going in a much different direction and has a cast lined up as well. Empire is reporting that Vanessa Redgrave, David Thewlis and Rhys Ifans have joined the cast of Anonymous.

"We have Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Elizabeth; David Thewlis as William Cecil, old and young; and Rhys Ifans as The Earl Of Oxford. It's a true English cast and I'm really proud of it. There's 12 main characters and 20 or 30 other characters, and each of the characters is really good."

The new film centers on a centuries-old theory that William Shakespeare's plays were actually written by Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. Here's how Emmerich himself described the film to the site.

It's a mix of a lot of things: it's an historical thriller because it's about who will succeed Queen Elizabeth and the struggle of the people who want to have a hand in it. It's the Tudors on one side and the Cecils on the other, and in between [the two] is the Queen. Through that story we tell how the plays written by the Earl of Oxford ended up labelled 'William Shakespeare'."

Anonymous was released October 28th, 2011 and stars Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Sebastian Armesto, Rafe Spall, David Thewlis, Edward Hogg, Xavier Samuel, Sam Reid. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich.

I wish that Peter Jackson directed 2012 instead of Roland, it might have been even better.

Don't forget he's attached to the Independence Day sequels. He's a good director but not an excellent director since his films are pop corn like films.
don't get me wrong, he is well liked in the entertainment field but I wish he would stop making disaster films. Let someone else do that for a change.

I agree with IUH. The Patriot was actually a pretty decent movie. It was also one of the few with Heath Ledger that I liked a lot. Maybe this is what he needs to do, move away from disaster movies and do something else for a change of pace.

It will be interesting to see him do something that doesn't require huge special effects.

Emmerich did well with the Patriot. It may have not have been 100% historically accurate, but it's good compared to some of his other films...and it wasn't a disaster film, so maybe this will be decent. We'll see.
