3 Directors Tackle the Ripper Trilogy

U.K. pubcaster Channel 4 is developing a trilogy of films centering on the hunt for the notorious Yorkshire Ripper serial killer (not to be confused with Jack the Ripper), according to Variety.

The three crime films Revolution Films is producing for Channel 4 are based on three of the four books in British novelist David Peace's "Red Riding Quartet," which is set in Yorkshire in the 1970s and early '80s. The stories cover police corruption and perversion of justice in the hunt for the Ripper from 1975 until his detection in 1981, when Peter Sutcliffe was convicted of murdering 13 women. He is serving multiple life sentences.

Three directors, all of whom have previously worked with Film 4 on features, are onboard to helm the project, which is budgeted at $10 million in total. Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane) will direct Nineteen Seventy Four, James Marsh (Man on Wire) will direct Nineteen Eighty and Anand Tucker (And When Did You Last See Your Father?) will direct Nineteen Eighty Three.

Tony Grisoni, who wrote the screenplay for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, has adapted the three Peace books. Elements from Peace's second book -- "Nineteen Seventy Seven" -- will be woven into the three pics.

The films are being made as a TV series, with a U.K. theatrical release likely to follow.

Casting is currently underway. No production date has been set.

OMG. Pypebomb, I completely agree with you. I know Moviebuff, that's what I mean about susp*cious motives. All I can do is voice how sick I am at this and won't be watching the film. The least they can do is show a bit of dignity to the people directly affected by him, and not try to make this a Scream style slash-fest.

The motive is money Turok 'X'. The industry's execs are a bunch of money hungry dipsh*ts. You've seen what the Friday the 13th and Halloween series have done for the slasher genre. Guess they think a REAL version of Jason or Michael will bring in a truck load of cash.

Screw the execs and screw this prick. He deserves the chair.

An interesting idea Cell? This isn't fiction, and I can tell you something, it won't go down well with many people over here, especially where I live, in the North of England. I was only 7 when he was caught, but I can still recollect the fear and loathing he caused. Extensive doc*mentaries have been done on this subject, so I'm susp*cious as to the motives of making this film. The death penalty would have been too good for what this f*cked-up pile of sh*t did.

Still the idea sounds interesting, and it's something I would check out. This idea has alot of promise.

I wonder if this would even make it into the United States??!.

Not watching any movie about this f*cker. Murdered 13 women? He slaughtered them, and only this weekend he claims he's better now, and wants out of prison. F*ck off Sutcliffe, you should be left to rot!!!!!!!!!!
