Starting this Tuesday, June 26th, MTV.com and Apple's iTunes will begin airing a new original web series called So, You Want to Be a Movie Intern. The six-part internet-only show will chronicle the lives of nine movie interns who are forced to work and live together in Romania. The exciting series will give viewers a first hand account of what it was like to be on the set of Fox Walden's upcoming fantasy film The Dark is Rising.
Not only are these would-be auteurs forced to contend with the very unglamorous life of being a crew member, they are also forced to compete against each other for the chance to win a state of the art Apple computer. To say there's a little bit of tension in the house they must all share is an understatement.
While on location in Bucharest, Romania, I was shown the pilot episode, which reveals the fast paced world of these nine individuals. Having been a grip myself, I could sympathize with their plight. The show is a very entertaining, insightful look at what it takes to be a movie intern. And it offers some great behind the seasons footage from the set of The Dark is Rising.
Don, one of the producers, told us, "What we are essentially doing is a behind-the-scenes episodic series based on a group of nine interns who have come here for the duration of the show. And it's these experiences of the wide-eyed, tenderfoot sort of intern group that has no idea what is going on. They have all come here to live in one house. As you can imagine, there is a lot of material there. For example, episode four is called "The Pressure is On!" This is an episode where all of these interns are working eighty hours a week. Then, they are thrown full swing into a competition being put on by Apple Computers. They have to make three short films in addition to working those eighty hours a week. So, they are doing this in their free time. The three grand prizes are three Apple Computers. For them, they are nine aspiring filmmakers. And this is their dream. To have a nice twenty-four inch Imac computer."
He continued, telling us, "Right now there are six episodes. But that might change. These will most likely be on the The Dark is Rising DVD, but that is still up in the air at this time."
Scott from Joblo and I actually ran into one of the interns while waiting for our flight out of Bucharest. His name was Jason, and he let us in on the winners of the new Imac computer. We don't want to give that away, though. He did say he had a lot of fun in the house, and that the series makes it look way worse than it actually was. He didn't get the whole thing about the ping-pong table, since they maybe had time to play on it once. All of the ping-pong footage you see came from a single night of partying. Jason seemed pretty proud of the series. But more than anything, he said he was tired. And just couldn't wait to get back home.
Be sure to watch all of the episodes this summer. Its an enjoyable little ride, and perfect for those of you thinking about a job in movies. It might just make you think otherwise.
