I was really expecting "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" to win for Best Visual Effects, because I seriously think NO other movie can outsmart Weta Digital. Hard to believe "Hugo" outsmarted them (I still haven't seen it though).
And for "War Horse," I never saw that movie either, but considering how famous it was in the theaters back in late December, I was expecting THAT movie to win for Best Picture. I was also disappointed that John Williams did not win Best Score for neither "War Horse" nor "Tintin." He's one of my Top 5 favorite composers, and he did not win for either one of those 2 movies. Such a shame.
But hey, at least "Rango" won for Best Animated Feature, which was the ONLY pick I liked than the others.

The show was decent, the winners were terrible pics.
I absolutely LOVE Meryl Streep, but she did NOT deserve that Oscar last night, that was Michelle Williams'.
Rise of the Apes not only got snubbed from Best Supporting Actor, but they even snubbed it from Visual Effects. I mean c'mon, Hugo deserved the other wins but VFX? They just couldn't get their noses out of Scorsese's ass.
The Artist deserved it's nominations, but Best Picture was a bit too much, and Best Actor was way too much.
Billy Crystal was barely OK, completely forgettable. Shame Eddie Murphy backed out, he would've done a great job. Will Ferrell and Zack Galiafinakis stole the show with that bit.
Honestly, I haven't cared about the Oscar's Awards for some time now, I only watched it to see some celebrity gossip. I'd rather watch the Academy's Science and Technology Awards.

@ROFLitschristian Depends on what your definition of a "good" movie is, and that is subject to change since we all have our own opinions and tastes.
I believe the winners were well deserved winners, even though alot of movies were overlooked.
Drive is one of my favorites and it didn't get the praise it deserves, but still alot of other movies who also deserved praise got it.

@m2 The overall theme of recently released acclaimed movies seem to be towards the making of film and the magic of film.
The Artist, Tree of Life, Hugo... just to name a few.
It's been a great celebration of how wonderful this medium of art really is.

If I'm going to be perfectly honest, I thought the awards were total sh*t. Not just the show itself, but all the noms and awards. Every year my interest lowers for these things. It's all about being popular rather than being good... whatever.

Call it a boring night, but I saw it as a whole day of celebrating film. We all have different opinions on who we want to see win so its impossible to satisfy everyone. I don't think its right to have surprises just to be unpredictable.

@thedude-abides I'm sure Gary Oldman will get many roles for the next 5-10 years, after his wonderful role in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
He will be rewarded. I'm sure of it.

@bruce-ha I'm not gonna say he'll never win, but the fact that he's been the best character actor in Hollywood for 15 years and it took him this long into his career before garnering his first nomination doesn't bode well for his chances, obviously.

@narrator I don't get it. I've heard it twice now, that Oldman won't get another Oscar chance. Why wouldn't he? Is he dying or have i missed something? If Christopher Plummer gets an award at 82 then there should be no doubt in your mind that Oldman, sooner rather than later, will get recognized by the academy. I agree with you that alot of great movies and actors were overlooked but you can't dispute with any of the winners. There weren't really that many who didn't deserve the award they got. I'm still optimistic on Oldmans chances of getting an award sometime soon.
I can't say this enough, the Artist was an absolute amazing movie. The love between the two protagonists is untouchable and should be compared to the likes of Titanic. When she looks at the film George Valentin was holding on to during the fire i thought my tearducts would dry up for ever. That kind of emotions being evoked on the audience and being a black/white silenced movie... It deserved the praise. My new favorite film of all time.

Everything was pretty much what I expected. I was very suprised that Hugo got Visual Effects over Apes, and even though Christopher Plummer was good, I think he most likely got his on the substance of his role (if you know what I mean) & his age. Personally, I was much more moved by Nick Nolte in Warrior.

@doubler0522 I agree. Not taking anything away from Streep, but I thought Viola Davis should have won.

@bruce-ha, haha. Funny. Don't feel sad for me, I'm a happy go lucky guy and sad people annoy me to no ends. My '62' comment was in regards to the prestigious *ssholes who nominate their friend more often than the deserving party, which may or may not have been the case for the Best Actor award.
I thought Alex was good, absolutely, but Oldman was flawless in a far harder role to pull off, IMO. Not to mention that he'll likely never get nominated again, which is what I was acknowledging more than anything. The man deserves a lifetime achievement award more thank Tom Hanks and others I've seen receive them.
The Oldman conversation and the Academy being a bunch of old snobs and bigots are related comments, true, but not necessarily the same argument. So yeah, don't really know where you're going with the whole Artist point... I felt Hugo swept for no reason, and I was rooting for Tree of Life, but I'm not ticked at the Artist's wins. More like I'm ticked at Meryl's third win, Rise of the Planet of the Apes visual effects snub, Tintin's snub (it didn't get nominated), Drive's snub, Shame's snub, etc.

@darkknight406 -- I heard Michelle Williams and Rooney Mara did an outstanding job in the movies that they starred in - I can't say the same for Meryl Streep. I heard it was a decent performance, but nothing more.
It's the Academy Awards, and Meryl Streep starred in a movie, how is she not going to win? Think about it. The Academy Awards is the most biased award ceremony of all-time, or at least I'd like to think so.

boring night, no happy surprises, Meryl Streep really didn't deserve that Oscar, Warhorse did deserve at least one Oscar but didn't get it, Billy Cristal was ok. The Artist was the film of the night, also Hugo too. the rest was boring, sorry but true

I was thinking that Hugo would win every award, but it was just like Avatar: it only won the technical awards, which is fine, because The Artist deserved to win every other award :)

@narrator If you think, you have to be 62 to recognize that Jean Dujardin did an outstanding job in the Artist then i feel sad for you. I thought he deserved it. Gary Oldman would also have deserved it. But just because the Academy gave the oscar to the Dujardin, doesn't mean he didn't deserve it.
That movie is my new favorite movie of all time. The experience i got from that movie, i couldn't ask for anything more from a movie. I've never really watched a silent movie before, and for that movie to be that good. An instant classic, and it just envokes everything a movie is supposed to envoke in the audience.
Even though i loved Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and i love Gary Oldman as an actor.... The Artist and Dujardin were phenomenal.

Why did Meryl Streep win best actress?
Seriously this Meryl Streep thing every year is getting on my nerves
She's really not a good actress
I don't know what's so special about her performances
She's very predictable and her presence of screen ruins any film for me
Just my opinion - I really don't like her acting

And thus Oldman will never win a Best Actor Oscar. F*ck, this was a terrible Oscar season. I finally caught the show on my local channel (it was late here) and it was disappointing. The winners weren't who I felt deserved the awards, obviously.
@dan1, I agree. Though the average age of an Academy member is 62, and you have to have huge list of the types of films that THEY like and be buddies with them in order to be inducted into the Academy. A bunch of old, pretentious bigots. F*ck 'em. We had our own Oscars!

@dan1 Drive won Best Picture, Michael Shannon won Best Actor, Charlize Theron and Tilda Swinton tied for Best Actress and Andy Serkis snagged Best Supporting Actor from Albert Brooks and Patton Oswalt (but it was close). Tintin won for Best Animated Feature, and some stuffy British film won makeup. And the muppets took home everything else. You're welcome.

The show was okay. And I by that I mean 5 minutes of Billy Crystal's material was funny. There wasn't much variety in the in-between segments of the show. All I wanted to see was The Artist win Best Actor and Best Picture. So I thought the night was a success. It may have been a boring night, but at least I wasn't cringing like last year's.
