15 Finalists Set for Visual Effects Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 15 films have been selected for consideration for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 84th Academy Awards.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:



In early January, the members of the Academy's Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee, who selected the 15 films, will narrow the list to 10.

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on Thursday, January 19. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The Academy Awards episode 84.1, "84th Annual Academy Awards" stars Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, Zach Galifianakis.

Captain America: The First Avenger was released July 22nd, 2011 and stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci. The film is directed by Joe Johnston.

Hugo was released November 23rd, 2011 and stars Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Ray Winstone, Emily Mortimer, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory. The film is directed by Martin Scorsese.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released August 5th, 2011 and stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton, David Oyelowo, Tyler Labine, Jamie Harris. The film is directed by Rupert Wyatt.

    Lets not ignore MI4 for is special effects, it may not have the best visual effects, but its special effects were incredible, and in the eyes of the academy, they're one and the same.

    should go to Harryn Potter in my opinion. The VFX were breathtaking in the film. From the giants attacking Hogwarts to Hogwarts itself, I was in awe at how amazing the special effects were. Everything was so clean and detailed and realistic. Hands down, I think that Deathly Hallows Part II deserves this Oscar.

    I surprised X-Men even made the list, it had some great VFX shots, but also had some of the most terrible ones of any blockbuster this year.

    Apes and Captain America are my top two (pending the ones I haven't yet seen). The facial emotions in Rise of the Apes were motion capture at its finest, and they did an excellent job with the "pre-serum" Steve Rogers in CA:TFA.

    There are a lot of visually-stimulating films in this list, though. I thought Asgard and the Rainbow Bridge were really well done in Thor, and from what I've seen Hugo looks like a visual masterpiece.

    I hope it doesn't go to X-Men or Tree of Life. While I highly enjoyed both films, the visual effects were pretty suspect in moments. BAD CGI dinosaurs were an awkward moment.

    3. Dark of the Moon: Clocking in at over two hours of constant visuals, combined with the actually bearable use of 3D, it deserves a nom at the least.

    Personally, I thought some of the effects in Harry Potter looked like sh*t. I still think it'll be nominated, but there were multiple times when you could see patchiness in the continuity. My picks:
