EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Go Behind The Mask of Jigsaw With Saw III's Tobin Bell!

Talking Jigsaw, laying on a bed all day, and the World Series!

If you can't wait for the carnage, you're in luck! Jigsaw is back in Saw III! And this time, he's got help from Amanda, played by Shawnee Smith.

The man behind the clown mask sat down with us to talk about returning for the third installment of the horror series. For Tobin, it's all about keeping still on a bed; because of his declining health, he's forced to keep bed-ridden. But don't worry, Jigsaw is playing lots of mind games.

We sat down with the man behind the mask to get a little more personal about coming back to play the disturbed John Kramer in Saw III:

If Jigsaw were to ever become a video game character, where would you want to take him?

Tobin Bell:
I've never played a video game in my life, so I couldn't answer that question; I don't have a clue - I just hope it would be smart and that it would be entertaining and some what amusing. I come from pinball, pushing the buttons and knocking the ball.

When you're on set, what goes through your mind when you're laying on a bed the entire time?

Tobin Bell:
Whatever's right in front of me; I don't think about tomorrow, I don't think about yesterday. I think about the ride I'm about to take for the next 40 seconds, or whatever the take is about. How am I going to serve the camera that's over here on Bahar; they've already shot my side, it's over here on Bahar. I'm not going to move my head too much; they just want a piece of my head, but not my whole head. You're thinking about all these technical things that aren't very jazzy or exciting, but aren't very dramatic. But nonetheless, the film would be f*cked without them, so I'm focusing on how I can do the best job I can in the next 40 seconds and nothing else beyond that. And, I check myself out to make sure I haven't gotten too relaxed, and make sure I have the words in my head. Because sometimes you get too relaxed and the words kind of go out; that's kind of what I do - concentrate on the next minute.

What kind of things were you writing down in your journal from this experience?

Tobin Bell:
Well, generally, I don't write anything on the set; but I'll go back to my dressing room and take a look at some notes I've made on the next thing we're going to do so I can refresh my memory of what's going on. If something has occurred to me that I'm not sure of - like, what's the time passage between when Amanda left the room to when she came back into the room. Was it five minutes, was it 20 minutes; what's transpired during that 20 minute time. What was I thinking about, what was going on? If in the previous take, she had brought me a cup of tea, was that working; would I rather have had that handed to me, or have her put it on the table, and why? Because she had handed it to me in the last take, and I felt it distracted from what we were doing. I would check on notes related to things; if it was something that occurred to me, and I couldn't remember, I would go through a notebook to find out what I want - 'What do I want in this scene? What is it he's after?' And I'd thumb through scene 'so and so;' here are some choices. Based on what we just did, here's one there; I try to jot down the homework I do so that I have it and it's available to me. The biggest trick is to find it; which page is it on.

Finally, who are you picking in the World Series - Cardinals or Tigers?

Tobin Bell:
Tigers - no question about it, American League; I'm an American League guy.

Who's your team?

Tobin Bell:
Yankees! I'm a Yankees guy; I'll tell you a quick story. I'm in Yankee Stadium a few months ago, standing next to the dugout; Jeter comes down the dugout. I'm standing there with my 11-year-old; he says, 'Would you sign my ball?' He signs my son's ball. 'Where you from, son?' 'West coast.' 'Play ball?' 'Yeah, Little League.' 'What do you play?' 'Pitcher and third base.' 'Here's your ball.' Jeter's holding a bat in his left hand, the one he's just used in batting practice; this is 4:30 in the afternoon. He says, 'Here, keep this.' And he hands him the bat; and it still has the pine tar on it, signed with a number, it says New York Yankees; it's sitting in our house.

Tobin also told me another story after the recorder went off about having Jason Giambi come over to him at an Ultimate Fighting match a few weeks ago. Jason told Tobin how much he loved his movies, and he gave him a hug.

But don't worry, Jigsaw isn't that cordial in Saw III; check out the destruction when it hits theaters October 27th, rated R.
