I liked this film a lot more than I know I should have. It's fun watching Milla Jovovich kill a bunch of zombies, and I won't apologize for it, dammit.
Okay, so, anytime you're talking about a sequel, you have to talk about the film or films that came before it. It's a law. So, for the court's record, I liked the 1st Resident Evil film. Not perfect, of course, but an enjoyable romantic comedy. The 2nd RE film, however comma was atrocious. Not entertaining. Not fun. Just, well- it was just not anything.
(Not sure if there's a law that says if there's an adaptation of something into a movie, you have to say whether or not you liked the source material, but just in case- I am a huge fan of the RE games. But since the movies are only loosely based on the games, it doesn't affect my opinions of the movies. Hence why this last paragraph is in parenthesis. Move on.)
Resident Evil: Extinction rips off a lot of other films- like Mad Max/Road Warrior, Day of the Dead, The Birds, and so on. And there's no battin' an eyelash about it. But I'll be honest, I actually liked the way the film picked cool elements from other films, and put them together for something fun. I guess whether you care about that sort of thing all the time, or just some of the time, will determine if you give this movie a free pass for some blatant piratin'. For RE: E, I've decided that I only care some of the time.
Not to say that all's well in Zombieville. There are several things that make you go "wait a minute, there, movie making guys!" Like how come it only took five years for the entire planets ecosystem to crash? I known there's a super virus on the loose, but why does it affect ALL LIVING LIFE (including plants), but not our lovely actors? For that matter, how does Vegas get swallowed up in sand? Ever been to Vegas? It's not surrounded by giant sand dunes, but by a lot of cactus and rocks. And magicians. Why is it that every time people enter an old building in the movie, the go inside, and sneak around? Why not just make a bunch of noise, and if there's a zombie inside, the noise will drive him out, so you can pick 'im off out in the open?
Wait, why am I over-thinking a Resident Evil movie?
So logic doesn't play too much into the film. But the action is cool and well paced, the Mad Max apocalypse mixed with zombie apocalypse goes well together, and Milla is hot. If you don't like any of the Resident Evil movies, you will probably not like this. If you liked the 1st one, but hated the second one, you should like this. If you liked the 1st AND the 2nd one, then you goddamn better like this one.
