"A thrilling horror movie worthy of it's R rating!"

- Brian Balchack
(2.5/5 Stars)
Winter, it seems, is the time to release horror films this year. This winter we are served up another helping of horror from the folks at New Line Cinema with the release of Final Destination 2, and I can confidently say that this is the best out there so far.

Does anyone remember the first Final Destination? I saw the film for the first time when it went to video, and to tell you the truth I was expecting the absolute worst. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised by it's lack of cheese.

Well, I didn't quite have the same feeling about Final Destination 2, but if you're expecting a really poorly made horror sequel, you'll find that this film isn't that bad at all. The thing I really like about this sequel is the fact that only one of the main characters from the last film has returned to the sequel. What does this mean? It means that in true 80's teenage horror fashion, all of the major players from film one died in film one, except one survivor which carries on the torch to the next cursed group of teens.

The performances by the virtually no name cast were great, taking into consideration the norm of crappy horror film acting, but the obvious champ in this film is death itself. The gruesome depiction of the each individual death scene in this film really shine through, making the movie. The film makers took a "no holds barred" attitude, as they did with the first film, with what was shown to the audience.

The beginning of the film starts with a car crash which sets death in motion. With no ambient music setting the tone of the scene, this car crash is one of the most horrifying freeway wrecks ever portrayed in modern cinema. I think it's safe to say that Final Destination 2 is bloodier then it's predecessor, which makes for an extremely fun ride.

As I sat watching the film, the audience couldn't help cheering and laughing as each death took place. It's what you really want out of a horror film...to be scared or disturbed by the harmless images on the screen so bad that your only reaction is to laugh and comfort yourself back into reality. This is what I give Final Destination 2 credit for. It did exactly what it set out to do and didn't hold back.

Final Destination 2 won't be a film for every movie goer, but it will fare as great date movie. It has all the bells and whistles you could ask for from a fun horror ride, and even the hardcore horror fanatic will find some worth in the film's death scenes. Remember...death is coming.
