"Costner is interesting as the cool-headed murderer who wants to stop killing but finds the addiction is too much for him."

- Francine Brokaw
(3.5/5 Stars)
Kevin Costner stars in this psychological thriller about an addict, only this guy isn't addicted to drugs or alcohol. He's addicted to killing. Brooks (Costner) is a successful business man with a loving wife (Marg Helgenberger) and a teenage daughter (Danielle Panabaker). Outwardly he seems like a stable man, but he is deeply disturbed. He continually has conversations with his subconscious (William Hurt) who urges him back to the dark side. Although it has been two years since he gave up the life of a murderer, attending AA meetings and spending his off hours working on his craft of pottery, he finds it is too hard to stay away from murder.

Two years ago the thumbprint killer ceased his killing spree, but now he has returned and Detective Tracy Atwood (Demi Moore) is back on his trail. Tracy is a strange person herself. She has $60 million dollars to her name and yet she is a policewoman. Ask any police personnel and they will tell you if they had that money they wouldn't be doing what they do. Well, anyway, Tracy is in the midst of a messy divorce at the same time the thumbprint killer returns.

Brooks is meticulous about his work. He plans everything down to the minute detail and thoroughly cleans up after his deed is done. He thrives on killing. It is his drug. And he keeps being spurred on by his subconscious.

On his return to the killing life, Brooks makes one mistake and leaves the curtains open during the crime. He is photographed by a neighbor who hunts him down but, interestingly enough doesn't want to turn him in. Instead this man wants to be in on the next murder!

As if this bizarre circumstance isn't enough, Brooks' daughter returns home having just dropped out of school. In time he learns she has possibly inherited his disease.

This is a strange story filled with intricacies as Brooks plots and plans his next murders all the while thinking about his own death which he feels would be the only way to stop his addiction. With the strong-minded detective hot on his heels, he plans the perfect way out, and weaves a web that could put an end to the hunt for the thumbprint killer.

Costner is interesting as the cool-headed murder who wants to stop killing but finds the addiction is too much for him.
