Michael Madsen stars as Sean Kelleher in this intense and incredibly dramatic story of life and love in Ireland. When Sean, an accomplished boxer, accidentally kills his brother-in-law while sparring, he is emotionally affected by the incident. Then, when his wife is on her deathbed, he promises her he will never box again. This is not a difficult promise to keep, considering what happened to him. But things change making it impossible to keep his promise.
With the medical bills piling up from his wife's illness and funeral, Sean finds it difficult to keep up, but he does so by borrowing money from friends. Then when his young son is diagnosed with the same heart disorder that took the life of his wife, Sean feels overwhelmed. He wants to give his son the best medical treatment possible. But that is an expensive operation in America. The government agrees to put up $50,000 if Sean can come up with the other $250,000.
Sean is forced to sell his house, but with the help of some "travelers", aka gypsies, he and his son Michael find themselves in a mobile home in the middle of the traveler's camp. To some he is a friend, but others see him as an outsider.
The gypsies are preparing for their annual fighting championship, and Sean sees this as the only way to get the money to save his son's life. He goes back on his promise and with the help of his old trainer (Richard Chamberlain) he starts back on the road to boxing. The thing is, the style of boxing in this championship is different than what he is used to. There are no helmets, no gloves, and only two rules - no kicking and no jabbing below the belt. Otherwise, it could be a fight to the death. Is it worth it? These fighters are brutal but his son's life is all that he has on his mind.
With the help of his new friends, his old trainer, and the love of his son, Sean gives it his all.
This movie is touching and sensitive. It is a story of love, family, and friendship. It is not a story of boxing, although that is a big part of the show. It is an emotional journey taken by this man who lost his friend, his wife, and will do anything he can to not lose his son.
