Jack Frost (Michael Keaton), a father working hard to achieve a lifelong dream of making it big as a musician, has never been a great father or husband. A long history of broken promises and trips away from home have left his family longing for more. After years of sacrificing time with his wife (Kelly Preston) and son (Joseph Cross), he is prepared for the most important audition of his life. But, at the last minute, he decides to skip the audition and rush home to spend Christmas with his family. Tragically, he is killed in a car accident before he makes it home and before he can prove to his family that there is nothing more meaningful to him than they are.

A year later, after living a hard year without a father, Charlie remembers a fleeting moment they spent together building a snowman. Longing for his father, he builds a snowman and tops it off with his dad's old hat and scarf, wishing that his father were there. Fulfilling his son's wish, Jack returns to his family... as a snowman. Even in the guise of this "cool character", Jack will become a "real" father to his son and prove that a father's love never dies.
