Move over Frankie, Moondoggie, Kahuna and all you other famous surfing dudes, because here comes Cody Maverick! "Surf's Up" is not a penguin movie. There have been far too many penguin movies recently. "Surf's Up" is a surfing movie. It just happens that the cast is made up primarily of penguins.
This animated comedy focuses on the world of surfing and specifically the world of little Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBoeuf). All he loves to do is surf. When he was young he met his idol Big Z (Jeff Bridges) who told him "never give up - find a way. That's what winners do." Big Z was he best surfer on the planet, until one day he wiped out on a big wave and was presumed dead.
Now Cody is entering his first surfing competition where he comes face-to-face with Big Z who is now living a solitary life. Big Z takes a liking to the little guy and takes him under his wing, so to speak, trying to get Cody to enjoy his life and not think only about winning. Cody learns a lot while preparing for this big competition - about surfing and life. His biggest lesson is that being a winner doesn't always mean coming in first.
With the SPEN (Sports Penguin Entertainment Network) covering the big event, all eyes are on Cody who hopes that one day he'll get the love and respect from his family that he feels is missing. Through this competition he grows up and learns more than he ever imagined.
Animation has come a long way and the animation in this film is first rate. The characters are absolutely adorable, and this is a movie kids and parents can enjoy together. Besides Cody and Big Z, there is Lani the lifeguard (Zooey Deschanel), Chicken Joe (Jon Heder), another surfer in the competition, and yes, he is a chicken, Mikey Abromowitz (Mario Cantone) the over-stressed shorebird who is the talent scout/recruiter for the competition, Reggie Belafonte (James Woods), the otter who loves competition, and a slew of other fun characters.
This "Major Ocean Picture" is sure to bring smiles to audiences everywhere - not to mention all the merchandising that is going along with this film! It's a fun film with a lot of heart. Cowabunga!
