"At 105 minutes it might be a bit long, but the characters are enjoyable and the premise is amusing."

- Francine Brokaw
(3/5 Stars)
Marriage and analysis is the focus of this romantic comedy centering on Ira Black (Chris Messina), a 33-year-old neurotic man who has spent the last 12 years in therapy and still has not even cracked the surface of his neuroses. After 12 years his analyst terminates their relationship and that very same day Ira meets Abby (Jennifer Westfeldt), a free-thinking woman who changes his life forever.

Abby is the salesperson at a gym and when Ira stops in to see what they have to offer, she is more interested in him than in selling him a membership. Abby is friends with everyone at the gym and the minute they meet she decides he is the man for her. They both feel an attraction and decide to get married - all in one day.

Abby's parents Michael and Lynne (Fred Willard and Frances Conroy) are free and easy people, which directly contrast Ira's parents Arlene and Seymour (Judith Light and Robert Klein), who are both analysts, grumpy, and difficult. They try to talk their son out of marrying Abby, but fail.

Everything is going great in the new marriage until Ira discovers Abby has been married before - two times. Things start to unravel, not only for Ira and Abby, but for Michael and Lynne, and Seymour and Arlene. New therapists are brought into the mix and soon the screen is filled with nothing but disappointed spouses and analysts trying to put the pieces together.

This all leads Ira to think that marriage might not be a good institution. He wonders if it is "a fad that's had an unusually long run." The three couples along with ex's and a bunch of therapists combine to make this a cute story with plenty of funny scenes. At 105 minutes it might be a bit long, but the characters are enjoyable and the premise is amusing. It's a delightful film written by Jennifer Westfeldt who also wrote Kissing Jessica Stein.
