Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Kate, a no-nonsense chef who runs her kitchen with the precision of an army training officer. She lives for her work and has a loyal following who appreciates her delectable creations. But when Nick (Aaron Eckhart) is hired as her sous-chef, everything changes. And not only in the kitchen.
Kate's sister dies, leaving nine-year-old Zoe (Abigail Breslin) in her care. Kate knows nothing about raising a child. Now she is dealing with a little girl who desperately misses her mother, and chaos at the restaurant. Nick enjoys listening to opera when he cooks, and everyone in the kitchen enjoys having Nick around. Let's face it. He's more fun than a drill sergeant.
Yes, the basic premise has been done over and over again, but Zeta- Jones and Eckhart are delicious together, and there is a tender story at the heart of this film.
In the midst of all the upheaval in her life, Kate says she wishes there was a "cookbook for life, with recipes telling you exactly what to do." Don't we all? On top of everything, a romance is brewing between Kate and Nick, much to Kate's chagrin. She has not let herself trust anyone in years. Will Nick be the one to light her fire?
Even though this type of story has been done before, it's safe to say this one is well done. It's sweet with just the right amount of spice and a dash of humor. It has the right ingredients for the perfect blend of romance and drama. Don't expect an academy award film. Just enjoy this little treat. Bon appetit!
