I originally thought this was going to be awful. I knew nothing about it, and for some reason rented it back when this was FIRST released on DVD. Now, I own this movie, love it, and have watched it countless times, and showed it to several friends of mine, whom have all enjoyed it as well. Now is this the best movie ever made? Nah. By most standards, this is not even the best comedy ever. Now, for me, there is something about this movie I find so damn funny, enjoyable... And yes, even cute. This movie is more than just potty humor, it grows into a seriously funny, believable, and even heart-breaking (for a while at least) love story.

It is about Zack and Miri (big surprise!) who are best friends since the school days. They are "just friends" and now roommates. However they are financially broke, and have next to no money. Their power gets shut off, and have no money to turn it back on. Zack has the great idea to make a porno! The film is the adventure of them trying to make their movie, and of course they run into problems, and Zack and Miri even recover some hidden feelings for each other they did not know existed! It is incredibly funny, dirty, and yet romantic.

The acting is honestly not the best. Seth Rogen as Zack and Elizabeth as Miri are both fantastic. They were such great picks, and have great chemistry together. I always like Seth Rogen; I think he is a very funny guy, and says his lines with some pizzaz and excitement, and really seems to get into his roles. Elizabeth Banks is not a huge actress, but a damn cute girl. However, much like Seth Rogen, says he lines well, and puts herself into believable situations.

As for the co-stars, well maybe I should just leave it at some of them are actual porn stars, so yeah... Besides them, the cast seems to be very energetic, and highly entertaining to watch. This is a Kevin Smith film, so he uses a lot of the cast he generally does. Jason Mewes is in this movie, however not as Jay. Same with a lot of Smith's general cast he uses. They're in this movie, but not as their usual characters. In fact, this is a very different film for smith. It is still a dirty comedy, but it really does not have any relation to his previous works.

Let me say I am a huge Smith fan. I've seen all of his work to date, and am happy to say I own everything he has done (except his most recent film Red State). He is more so a great writer, than director, but I still give him huge credit for directing his cast well, and his screenwriting to always making an entertaining, fun little comedy, if nothing else. Smith has a great way of making me sit there and enjoy ungodly amounts of dirty humor, and make it insanely funny. Not many people can get me to watch dirty comedies, but Smith is one of them. Seth Rogen is another, so I think that is why this movie worked so well.

This film is by no means a masterpiece in filmmaking, but on the enjoyment scale for me, personally, it honestly cannot be any higher. Most people do not understand why I find this movie so damn funny, and maybe you, reader, will not either. But I still highly suggest it to you, or anyone who wants a good, dirty laugh, or are a fan of Kevin Smith, like I.

@skywise Yep, but Res State was fully his; I think he did not do everything for Cop Out.

@bawnian-dexeus Oh ok, like relating the movie to something; makes sense. Same with me and Titanic.

@crypt Nah. More personal. From a night out with friends to something unexpected. Long story

@skywise I don't think so. Only one that I know of, which is titled Red State. It's kinda an action movie, I suppose.

@crypt I just meant I have not seen any Kevin Smith films since he made Zack and Miri. I think he has done 3 or 4 since then right?

@bawnian-dexeus As I mentioned to Huntsman, I think this movie takes a little getting use to. At the beginning I was not a huge fan of it either, with it's extreme potty humor. Thanks though!

@skywise The last Smith movie you saw is what you mean? But yeah, Banks is cute, funny, and an entertaining actress to watch. Thanks!

@john-m See that's the way I felt at first. I was around the same rating. But this movie kinda just grew on me after a third or so viewing.

I can understand your perspective for Rogen. I usually am tough on comedians, but something about his persona, I just enjoy. Anyways, thanks for reading!

Great review. This was the last Kevin Smith movie I have seen. Not because I did not like it, just conincidence. Anyway, I am a big fan of Banks myself. She is adorable.

I didn't like it as much as you. I gave it 3.5 stars. It had it's moments of humor, but Seth Rogen is really wearing on me. What I truly liked about it is Elizabeth Banks. I loved her in Scrubs, 30 Rock, The Hunger Games and this. The thing I didn't like in was Man On A Ledge, but that wasn't a very good film in general.

    Good Review @crypt.
