The first movie I will be reviewing this summer is X Men Origins: Wolverine. One of the most anticipated movies of the year. Starring Hugh Jackman in the title roll as the ruff and gruff Wolverine. Now of course people, whether your a comic book fan or not, know who Wolverine is. The man with the metal claws. But here in this installment in the ever growing X Men franchise and first installment in the Origins franchise, we get to see a different side to the popular Marvel character. Showing his roots as a young boy in 1800's Canada, through his battle in the numerous American wars. Civil War, World I & II, and Vietnam are all shown within the first 15 minutes of the movie. Now with this being one of the most popular superheroes ever created people and fan alike have very high expectations. For me, sadly, it delivered short.
I, being a comic book fan for practically all my life, was expecting something rather original but also something that stuck with the comic series. I got neither. The movie started out all right. Showing him with a special task force which included the likes of Sabertooth (Liev Schreiber ), Wolverines half brother, and Wade Wilson aka Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds). After Wolverine leaves the task force to pursuit a normal life the movie just turns into one big mess focusing way too much on Wolveines "normal" life as a lumberjack and a married man. The movie focuses way too much on his attempt at a normal life and then forces all of the action into roughly 45 min. Which truly is a shame because there were some very good fighting sequences throughout.
Even though Hugh Jackman puts in his all in his mediocre performance it is overshadowed by terrible editing and an even worse plot line.
Overall the movie was one big mess with filled with nothing but eye candy.
Overall: C-
