The movie did a Valiant effort of Capturing the essence of the book it was inspired by, but it came up short!!

Based on the children's book which was ten sentences long. The filmmakers didn't have much to work with. They needed to expand the story. The faults of the movie include: 1) casting adults as the monsters to act childlike, 2) Everyone excluding the mom seem uncaring, 3) Max wasn't a very likable character so why would I want to spend time with him???
