My buddy gave me this movie because he knows I love horror movies so much, and he said he's never watch it again. So I of course accepted! However, I was slightly disappointed with the direction the movie took. Sadly, it has annoying, boring and uninteresting characters, mixed with a lame plot...

The movie is basically aliens who are making zombies. Yeah... What? Ok, I could take that, but the movie does not take itself seriously, which just ends up quirky... In a bad way. The "jokes" or funny lines are horrible, and will more so make you cringe more than laugh. By the end of the movie (which drags on, by the way) you really feel like it should have cut to black a few minutes earlier. The film follows a girl whose back story you don't give a crap about, who is attacked by some zombie. Then a crazy guy who is apparently really good with guns, and owns a lot of guns comes and saves her. They befriend, in an odd way, and pick up retarded survivors who you are actually rooting to get eaten by zombies. Then they tried to be cool and original by adding the twist of aliens to the mix about one fourth into the film. Since they hint at it so damn early I didn't feel the need to add a "spoiler alert".

The actors are all unknown... And annoying. They're not so horrible of actors, it is more the directors' fault for making me hate them so; but there are still definitely scenes where it is apparent that the actors are just not very skilled. But in the end, it's really just a bunch of people who cannot figure out what they're doing and shooting 14 rounds out of a revolver.

There are two directors that apparently brothers, who go by the clever title of The Spierig Brothers. They also wrote it, produced it, and even edited it. They probably also had several other roles in the production of this film. Now, I totally respect that. I have high respect for filmmakers that do nearly everything for their movie. I'd like to see these guys do more, I just think they need practice. A lot of practice. The whole movie looked good (I'll mention how awesome the special effects were) but there are just some things that give the movie an amateur feel to it and just don't feel right where they are. Also they don't make the movie too entertaining, either. It's even slightly boring. They also don't know if they want this to be a horror comedy, or a horror film. They throw some random comedy in there, at horrible times. But the length between "humor" is so long where you forgot this was trying to be a comedy. And, is this an alien movie? Or a zombie movie? You never know.

However... Whoever did the visual effects are brilliant. It may even be the Spierig Brothers themselves, and if so, then their true calling is not making movies, but doing the visual effects for movies. The gore was great, and the alien stuff looked legit. Not just for some low budget flick, but as a real movie, the effects were good. I cannot stress enough how good they were. My only complaint for the visuals was the zombie fish (yep, I'll leave you with just that).

Overall, I'd say skip it, or don't go out of the way to watch it. However you should try to enjoy it if you end up watching it some day. If and when you do, do not expect a George Romero like zombie flick (I think the other review mentioned this as well). I know the poster and cover are looks pretty badass. Yep, that is three shotguns somehow attached together. Cool huh? Yeah, it's cool. But when the hell do they wear gas masks..................?

@crypt I've seen it. I liked it better than you and thought the zombie fish were pretty damn unusual. When I describe this movie I simply say, "sombie fish." Because if that doesn't sound intruiging enough for you, you probably wont like this movie. The acting is horrid since it was a low budget film and the Spierig brothers did do most of the effects themselves. They also directed Daybreakers which is a much more profesional looking film...with none of the fun.

They were going to make a sequel to The Dark Crystal but that project has been cancled. they are now working on a Robert heinlein story based on "All you zombies" - which is actually a time travel story.
