First am real surpised George lucas had this kind of film in him. It's quite artisticly and intelligently ambitious and it's almost a non-action sci-fi flick thats more of a social comentary on the 60's and were we are heading . Some would consider this almost a art-house sci-fi flick or a student film that shouldnt of been green lighted for a feature lenght project , but in reality it's way above that. Goerge lucas crafted a nice film that your mind is lfeft to decypher and aldo the futuresque sets/ location/costumes are mainly simple and minimal in colours but still quite stunning .
The film stays a bit mysterious and your left in the dark and left to figure more then one thing on your own. There 3 or 4 side plot lines that should of been more explained in my opion but their none the less captivating/entertaining . Great acting by Robert Duvall has always but Donald Pleasance is the show stealer in this , that perfomance was so far away then what am used to from The halloween franchise that it caught me by suprised . alslo Sid Haig has a small but memorable role in this
This material is not really accesible to everyone , I dont see someone with similar sci-fi tatse has stokie liking this , some would find it slow and probably pointless if they dint really get were lucas is going with all this .But if you do get it the metaphores/message or even goal of this film is even more relevent today in my opinion
If you like sci-fi flicks that will make you think and figure things out by yourslef rather then amazed you with action and can stand a film with a minimal/simple look , then this could please you

Good review man...I'm a huge George Lucas fan...I think that THX 1138 is his first feature film out of film school...it garnered mixed reviews (too smart for broad audiences). Then with help from Francis Ford Coppola getting Lucas a name credit, his ambitious 60's teen dramedy masterpiece, American Grafitti got made...Love that film (it starred a young, struggling carpenter named Harrison Ford)...Killer vintage Rock soundtrack. Its big success was necessary to craft...THE space opera opus, Star Wars/Empire/Jedi trilogy (Ewoks withstanding) to writing, creating Indianna Jones (named after his dog at the time.)
I saw a copy of THX 1138 the other day for cheap...I think I'll grab this, otherwise, what kind of lucas fan would I be?
