  • There's no thread for this yet?! I've been unbelievably excited for this since I found out Sir Kenneth Branagh was directing. I have the feeling this movie will be a campy spectacle of epic proportions.
People are asking for Brad Pitt to play Thor (in the tradition of his Achilles in Troy), but I'd rather see Pitt go boyscout as Captain America. Pitt is basically the Robert Redford of his generation.

They've pegged Alexander Skarsgard to possibly play Thor. After checking out some clips of him in HBO's True Blood, I can definitely see him in the role. He certainly has the look, and I think he has a sort of campy quality to the way he delivers his lines yet it's also subtle at times. Good choice if he gets the role, though I hope they let him grow a bit of a beard. Thor always looked more badass with a beard. The awesome thing is that if he was to play Thor, then his dad could play Odin and it would be authentic!

There is also a rumour of Josh Hartnett as Loki. Now, I'm not really a fan, and I could definitely think of people I'd rather see in the role, but who knows; he could surprise me.

Anyone else looking forward to this? I wonder if Nick Fury will make an appearance, as SLJ has just signed a nine-movie deal with Marvel!

  • I'm sure as the movie fleshes out there'll be a lot more interest and buzz. Skarsgard looks perfect for the lead, although I bet if he gets it he'll really bulk up. I'll be keeping my eyes open and look forward to seeing it whenever it makes it to the big screen.

  • Oh yeah. He's not huge, though neither is Hugh Jackman normally. When somebody gets a role like this they work out intensely.
I wonder where they'll go plotwise with this? It seems likely that Branagh (being such a lover of classic literature) will want to keep the initial Thor film out of the modern world and have it set solely on the plight of Asgard and the feud between Loki and Thor. Fury probably won't appear until the very end like in Iron Man.

  • As the song says, "what a difference a day makes". Yesterday Marvel Studios announced a revised movie release schedule leading up to their pride and joy, The Avengers.

Iron Man 2 is still being released on May 7, 2010.
Spider Man 4 is still being released on May 6, 2011.
Thor was to be released on July 16, 2010 but has been pushed back to June 17 2011.
The First Avenger: Captain America was to be released on May 6, 2011 but has been pushed back to July 22, 2011.
The Avengers was to be released on July 15, 2011 but has been pushed back to May 4, 2012, giving us plenty of time to see it before that whole end of the world thing in December of that year.

I am surprised that they are choosing to release three of these films, one right after the other, in the summer of 2011. I'd bet the dates will change over the next year or so. Regardless, I'm looking forward to all of these so whenever they show up in the theater, I will too.

  • I've never been a huge fan of Captain America (except for in MCW) so until they start getting some names on board as far as actors, writer, director, I'm far more interested in the rest. I am looking forward to the Avengers, though, as it will be super cool to see all those characters together. I think Edward Norton's Hulk will be much better as a part of an ensemble cast than as the star of his own film. I also really hope they have Vision in the movie as he is one of my favorite characters.

  • So if the "Marvel Spills the beans" piece on the Movieweb homepage is legit, than it seems Branagh is gunning for Alexander Skarsgaard to star in this movie, and Stellan to have a cameo as Odin!
It also says Branagh wants Josh Hartnett because he enjoyed his performance as Iago in "O" and he sees Loki as a similar character. I just REALLY hope they change Loki's costume for the movie, because I won't take it at all seriously if he has that goofy cape and strange crescent-spiked hat:

  • This could be old news and if it is I apologize, but I just read that Jon Favreau wants to and probably will direct The Avengers when he is done with Iron Man 2. I can get behind that.

ClarkParker : I just REALLY hope they change Loki's costume for the movie, because I won't take it at all seriously if he has that goofy cape and strange crescent-spiked hat.
But then, would he still be Loki? It could be like Superman without his cape, or Captain America without his shield. I'll have to wait and see.

  • Subtle changes. They seem to update a lot of superhero costumes these days just because they look good on the page but ridiculous in real life.

I heard about Favreau in the same article, and I can definitely get behind that. I think it will be a lot of fun with him at the helm. In the Avengers thread, I'm going to start a discussion on casting the other avengers.

  • It appears Chris Hemsworth has been cast. An interesting choice; he's australian not scandanavian, but he does have the appropriate look. You'll know him as James Kirk's father in the opening scene of Star Trek. I wonder what happened to Skarsgard? After seeing Angels and Demons I would have loved to see Stellan as Odin.

EDIT: On the heels of Hemsworth this guy has been cast as Loki. He's british and his name is Tom Hiddleston. I've never seen him in anything but I like the look of him way more than I would have liked Josh Hartnett in this role.

  • he looks the part, just then he needs to buff up

  • How do you like this one? :)

  • Not bad casting all things considered. He did a pretty good job in a little scene in Star Trek so I think he might do ok here.

  • Has Hemsworth been in anything anyone's seen?
  • Well as SPK said he had a small yet vital role in the latest Star Trek movie as none other than George Kirk, James T. Kirk's father. The rest of his credits are Australian television series.

Oh, and by the way CP. Loki is going to be played by Tom Hiddleston. I just hope Tom Middleton didn't read your post and think he got the job because he's really old and he might have succ*mbed from the excitement.

  • Haha...my bad. I actually had never heard of him and I just finished reading the article and posted his name from my short term memory. I couldn't be bothered to go back and check, but even then I thought I might have had it wrong. I got the photo right, though?

  • "According to Nuke the Fridge, actress Jessica Biel has been in talks to join the cast of Thor.

The site is reporting that, if cast, Biel would play the title character's love interest. The site's source didn't know the character's name, the source said they believed it was a female character that appeared in the Hulk Vs. Thor animated DVD. Possible female candidates that appeared in that DVD are Amora The Enchatress or Sif."

Great...now we have to put up with her gorgeous ass running around in scantily clad outfits

  • Thank God someone in the admin department decided to be serious for a minute and cast Natalie Portman in this movie. Yet another reason this is going to be awesome.

I just watched Branagh's version of Hamlet and I think it perfectly highlights why he was the right man to make this film. It's going to capture the campy old literary epic feel that a movie about a Norse thunder god requires.
