Two of CIA's greatest spy agents are at war with each other for the approval and love of a woman. The question is, who will she choose?
Since my nephew got sick, I didn't end up watching Arrietty, so I treated myself to some comedy and action. This, year, particularly this month, we have gotten not one, but two CIA based movies. The first was "Safe House" which was an explosive action film with two powerful lead roles. The second would be this movie, carried by three very talented actors ,and one annoying piece of garbage that just gets in the way of your entertainment. FDR Foster (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy) are the best agents in the agency and fail to capture their target on a covert mission. After being grounded to field work, Turk meets Lauren Scott (Witherspoon) and minutes later, meets FDR, and all three are suddenly caught in a love triangle, where each man utilizes their CIA resources to spy on each other and make sure neither get the girl, but one.
This Means War is a new twist on how to execute a love triangle. We've all seen both sexes in past films fight to the death just to win their opposite and brag about it. This time, McG brings out his Charlie's Angels expertise in bringing this romance to life with bullets and explosions. Guys and girls will enjoy this movie, but will favor more to the male viewers than the woman. Sure, the women have Pine and Hardy to drip over, Witherspoon for male fans, but while the movie promotes its love triangle, it also promotes bromance. You know, "bros before hoes". The relationship between the male leads is explored just as much as the romance. The hilarious part of it all is the emphasis on dick measuring, and let me tell you, rulers shall be broken.
While some jokes are forced and others perfect for the moment, the movie looses respect for two reasons: (1) Chelsea Handler. Good god, that woman should have just stayed in the kitchen. Every time she opened her mouth I wanted to choke on my popcorn or assume Hardy or Pine would shoot her just to do Witherspoon a favor. And (2), the editing. Now, I know the man may have worked on Terminator and the Angels, but here, he directs well, but could he at least have payed attention to the editing? What's with all the fade outs? Ridiculous I say!. The story isn't complicated and plot is fun to watch, even if they hint the overall of the movie earlier on.
Overall, This Means War is just a fun ride of a love triangle and bromance. Some will like and some will hate, but you know what, as a couple or a night out with friends, you'll have a blast.
