The Watch is a 2012 sci-fi comedy movie.

Directed by: Akiva Schaffer

Starring: Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Vince Vaughn, Richard Ayoade and Rosemarie DeWitt

Well, after reading Corey's review and the obvious low rating from other review websites, I decided to watch this after it's theatrical run and catch it in it's second run at the dollar theater. But, on a Sunday morning with my dad, after taking me to the gun range for the first time (which was awesome b.t.w.), he was interested in the movie, and of course he was paying so, why pass an opportunity right? So we went in.

Now like 21 Jump Street, I made clear that I enjoyed it more with company than I might have on my own. Same thing happened with American Reunion. The Watch, with it's R rating, depended a lot on sexual conduct, raw-crude jokes and adult level language. Funny, because the same could be said for Ted and the previous movies mentioned above and they managed to fair better than The Watch. I wasn't fully on board when the news came up for this project, but I kept an eye out for it. The trailer sure made it a bit more appealing.

Where does the movie fail? The execution of a few characters and the jokes. Like Corey, I agree that the last great comedy Stiller made was Meet the Fockers. As for Vince Vaughn, while his best was Wedding Crashers, I can't get enough of the man. As soon as he runs his mouth off or screams like he's having the time of his life, the man gets me to fall to my heels in laughter. Especially the part where they discover the spherical contraption and blow stuff up. Have you seen the face he makes when he destroys the shed? Hilarious to a pedigree of awesomeness. Jonah Hill was ok, but I'm afraid his comedy days are just about done. With an oscar nomination under his belt, he should switch genres before its too late. Richard Ayoade is new to me, so he was hit or miss. Then again, the jokes were hit and miss.

The writers have to realize at some point that these kind of gags can't carry the movie forever. But, when you have aliens and above average visual effects for the action, it makes up for the lack of plot coherence. Some of the characters weren't hashed out correctly and a few plot twists, while unexpected, were clearly off beat. Oh yeah, there is a female lead, who plays Stiller's wife in the movie. Rosemarie DeWitt; what a babe in her night underwear. Wolf!

In the end, my dad and I had a good bonding time. It's rare these days, but we make with what we can. Church? Nah, we got guns and comedy movies. That's our religion. Overall, best recommended to watch with friends to enhance the experience.

@bawnian-dexeus: "gun range for the first time, which was awesome btw." I love that breaking from topic with clever comments. I used to do that more often. Nice review.
