As her directorial debut, Sofia Coppola succeeds. Though boring in my point of view, it's impossible not to notice the loss of innocence in the story. Four girls meet their tragic end after their youngest sister commits suicide, following the words "You don't know what it's like to be a 13 year old girl". Sofia Coppola captures the hardships a family, the awkwardness of 1970's, and the obliviousness of a religious mother trying to protect her children. I have had two friends close to taking their own lives in our teen years so I can relate to the movie, regardless of its slow pacing. Teenagers sometimes feel trapped in the real world, especially in high school when they have to try and live up to society's standards. A good combination of depression and dark humor makes this production a little easy to view. Overall, a successful story in a time where nobody knew how to handle depression.

Great movie, one of Kirsten's first great performances as a teen. Sometimes I go back and watch all her good movies before Raimi's trilogy and I always start with this one. Good luck on winning the contest.
