This movie almost feels like a David Lynch movie that makes sense, being set in a beautiful nightmare. I love the blend of the beautiful Victorian and western settings with the 'matter-of-factness' style of performance and camerawork. Nolan has a great style of storytelling and creates a real feeling of dread with these characters that live in a fraternity of secrets. Much better than anything dealing with the Occult that ends up cheapening the fear of the unknown. All the elements here, magic-science, setting, the unknown and mental breakdown of characters add up to something very close to 'Lovecraftian,' probably the closest I've seen that didn't deal with extraterrestrials. It's great.
