The Passion is a viscerally effective and powerfully brutal film. While Gibson's directorial flourishes actually take away from the film in a couple spots, his overall vision works as a portrait of horror and redemption. A lot of the most effective acting in the film is done non-verbally, through glances and facial expressions; Jim Caviezel and Maia Morgenstern give pitch perfect performances as Jesus and his mother Mary, respectively. This film is a cathartic experience, like poetry, and it is undeniably moving.
