The New Guy: Synopsis
At East Highland High School, new guy Gil Harris (bJ QUALLS) is at the top of the popularity food chain. Mysterious and charming, Gil's got girls falling all over him and thugs scrambling to get his back. He's got East Highland High School in the palm of his hand. But Gil's got a secret. Not so long ago, at Rocky Creek High School, across town, Gil -- formerly known as Diz, a.k.a. Dizzy Gillespie Harrison -- was a 'blip', a loser so low, he's wasn't even on the social radar. So how did Diz change his life and become Gil the new guy? A simple plan, determination and the help of some unlikely friends.
Step One: Face Reality
Diz and his equally low-status circle of friends are bottom-feeders at school. With his senior year getting off to a dismal start, Diz is convinced that he will never rise above his status. Nothing and nobody will change this cruel fate. He is destined to be a blip.
Step Two: Time For a Change
In order to surpass his blip status, Diz needs to start fresh. He can't move, so he'll do the next best thing -- change schools. But in order to change schools, Diz needs to be expelled from Rocky Creek. Not easy when no one even knows you're there, and when the guidance counselor just thinks you need a little love. With careful planning, Diz systematically breaks every school rule he can think of. He blatantly cheats, attempts to bribe his teachers, even stages a private screening of his principal in the bathroom. His stunts are in vain until, in a rage, Diz destroys school property. That's it. Expulsion!
Step Three: Go to Prison
Where does a skinny white kid from the burbs go to get a new attitude, some intimidation skills and hair highlights a la Brad Pitt in Fight Club? Prison, of course. In this underworld of tough talking, fist throwing, hard-nosed criminals, crooks and villains, Diz is befriended by Luther (EDDIE GRIFFIN), the Mr. Miyagi to his Karate Kid. Under Luther's guidance and protection, and with the help of his many minions, Diz is radically transformed from dud to stud. Now he's got the walk, the talk, the shooting-daggers-with-his-pupils stare, and of course, the hair. It's goodbye to Diz and hello to Gil Harris, a.k.a 'The New Guy'.
Step Four: Find A New High School
The first day at a new school is of critical importance. Firstly, make an entrance. Cue the prison van and the armed guards. Secondly, establish position in the social hierarchy by taking down the biggest guy you can find -- at East Highland High, that's uber-jock Connor (ROSS PATTERSON). When Diz manages to take down Connor, he catches the attention of Connor's girlfriend and beautiful head cheerleader, Danielle (ELIZA DUSHKU), who thinks Diz may be a great alternative to the apathetic bullies she's been dating.
Step Five: Unite
Diz uses his power as one of high school's untouchables to foster peace among his classmates. He's recruited by Danielle to unite the school behind their pathetic football team. As Diz rallies the football team atop a horse, then whips the crowd into a frenzy, East Highland comes together across social boundaries: group hugs abound, tearful confessions pour from bullies, and even the marching band gets respect. This is more than a transformation of 'the New Guy', it's a transformation of the whole school.
Step Six: Be Careful What You Wish For
Some people just can't stand to let a good thing happen. Most of East Highland may be happy to be 'healed' by Diz, but he's got enemies who don't think group hugs are natural. And they don't like to see 'The New Guy' having all the fun, either. It doesn't take Diz long to realize that even if you can wipe the slate clean and start over, you can't betray old friends, and you still have to confront your past.
Step Seven: The Ultimate Lesson
Life is short. High school is even shorter. You only have one chance to be true to yourself and your friends. And in the end, what's the fun of being 'the New Guy' if you're too worried about someone discovering who you used to be? And what's the point of being popular when it's based on a lie? With his 'real identity' about to be exposed, Diz has a lot of thinking to do about what it truly means to be happy in high school.
