The story was the main problem of this movie. Going back to the island next to isla nublar to catch dinosaurs and bring them to the mainland. Now that right there is a very troubling matter. The screenplay by David Koepp did not function well in bringing this movie to life. I personally think Michael Crichton, who helped Koepp cowrite the screenplay for jurassic park 1, was a strong lending hand. Without him, this movie seemed less dull and less exciting. Of course we know that the dinosaurs are going to hunt down the people hired for the job as we saw the tourists fates in number one. The story though it sounds intriguing in some points, it drags far too long. We've already met Malcolm so why establish a deeper insight into his character when he was one of the main characters in the first one? New characters in this movie could not function well except for Sarah (Malcolm's girlfriend) who has a decent background. The other characters are boring however.
The acting-Jeff Goldblum does well bringing Dr. Malcolm back to life, except that i felt that he could've pushed it more. Julianne Moore was decent, she could've done better if she given more to work with rather then being Malcolm's thrill persisting girlfriend. Vince Vaughn, he did decent as well. The entire cast did decent not great. The only great actor in this one was Pete Postlethwaite who did great as a hunter seeking his grand prize-a t-rex and his mysterious character develops throughout the rest of the story but could've been given more insight. The one that i felt was least interesting in this movie was Malcolm's daughter played by Vanessa Lee Chester. She was given minimum lines and she could not manage to even portray a good character. All that was interesting was that she is Malcolm's daughter and i blame Koepp for not giving more insight into her character.
Directing-I give Spielberg props for bringing this back without making this a flop as most sequels did in the 90s. He did well directing the countless numbers of people on set and came out with a film that was a good sequel.
The visuals-great as the last one. The dinosaurs looked realistic in cgi as also in the puppetry. The cinematography was very decent Janusz Kaminski would come to win an oscar for "saving private ryan" later on, but I just wish he could have applied that to this movie. The lighting in this movie is horrendous however. You couldn't really see what was happening and even if it were raining at nighttime, you would still manage to see what is happening. For example: Jurassic Park 1. You could make out everything that was happening in the scene when the t-rex escaped.
Overall, not a bad movie, but a good movie. I still am a fan of this franchise and I just wished it were tweaked here and there, but still fans as myself weren't disappointed.

good review. but i can't say i agree. I liked the movie until it went into the city. thats when i was done. I agree it had a lot to live up to. But for me it just didn't live up to the first enough. And any sequel has to do that for me.

Good review. If Spielberg had made it like Crichton's novel it would have been better than JP1. But it was still fun. The first 2 are better than JP3 IMO.

Agree about this movie. People say "it sucked" just because it wasn't as good as the first.
