The Hitcher: Review By The Cryptkeeper

This movie is kind of hard to write about. I mean I liked it, but it is sort of bad. The acting is some of the worst I have ever seen by C. Thomas Howell, but is good by Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Then you got the fact that C. Thomas Howell does all the WRONG things in a situation like his. So I like it, but you gotta be able to forgive it's weaknesses, like I do.

The story is for the most part highly original. Yes, psycho killer movies have been done millions of times before. BUT not quite like this. This time, as you can tell by the title, our psycho is a hitch-hiker!!! Ya, after this movie, I will never pick up a hitch-hiker! The story follows a man who is going to California through the desert. Along the way he picks up a hitch-hiker. This was a bad mistake. Even though he kicks him out of his car, he still terrorizes him! He always finds him, and frames him to make it look like he is the madman killing innocent people on the road. It's a very creepy, realistic storyline.

The acting is dreadful. I mean, Rutger Hauer does good as the hitcher, and Jennifer Jason Leigh does ok as the one person that believes that Howell didn't kill all those people... But C. Thomas Howell. Oh man I needed to kill him. He just about ruined the movie. I still give the acting a 3, just because of Hauer and Leigh, but he drops the acting to a lower score, that's for sure. I have seen him in a few other movies where he does better, but not by much. He is a sh*tty actor, and needs to stop making movies.

The director is Robert Harmon. I really like his directing. I like how he portrays the hitcher in a realistic way... well sort of (you'll see what I mean when you see the movie.) He gives the movie an almost creepy undertone. Or at least tried. Howell stopped this from happening. I think he is a good director and his movie could have been better if they were a little smarter on the casting choices for the film.

The visuals are not really anything big in here. You got the very unpretty desert to look at... and that's about it. Not too much for the visual part of the film.

Overall, a movie that I really do like, but to be honest, C. Thomas Howell ruins the movie. Also they do all the WRONG things, but hey, what else would you expect from a movie like this? I recommend this film, just as long as you can look past terrible acting. I know it's hard... Especially in this case.

Of course you do, that's Bean's best role. Alec "Janus" Trevelyan, better known as Agent 006. "Goldeneye" is the best Bond ever. lolz.

Great review man. I've only ever seen the remake of this movie, I think it had Sean Bean as The Hitcher. Didn't it? Anyway, I really enjoyed that, and Rutger Hauer's one of my favorite actors, so I need to check this out sometime. Great review, again, man!!!!!

will do, MB123. Will do after I'm done with killerwoman here.

and no actually. I do write my own reviews. I don't just copy them from other sites. Besides I don't even know what kind if a site would have a review for a movie this old. Find one, and then come check back in. While you're at it, you can also f*ck yourself ;)

and you must be mental to think that Howell did a good job.

oh, and yes I did see the movie, and own it.

Did you just go to different websites to find pieces of reviews written from other critics. It seems like you just threw this together. Thomas Howell was great. You couldn't have seen this movie. I got three little words- QUIT WRITING REVIEWS!!!!

hmmmm.... well, even you gotta admit that they do all the WRONG things. so that also made me like the newer version better.

yes, i guess you are right on that one. Howell pretty much made me like the newer one better. but Sophia Bush & that other dude werent HORRIBLE they just werent AWESOME.

another reason why i think i like the newer one better is just because i wasnt in the 80's horror generation. lol. i still enjoy most of them though, as i do this one...

  18. MovieBuff

no no no no no..... the newer one is not better Crypt. What can I do to convert you? Hauer did a muc better job at being the creepy hitchhiker than Sean Bean did. The two kids in the new version were horrible actors.... where in this older version, it was only Howell. Jennifer did a good job in that department. And the face to face confrontation between Howell and Hauer at the end was great. C'mon.... admit it. It was just Howell's acting that turned you off.... this version's better.

Yea... Howell is just plain bad.... always has been. Even in one of the better movies he's made (The Outsiders) he is BAD. He plays Pony Boy and he SUCKED. That movie was great due to everyone else... Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez. What a star studded cast.... and Howell was the main character???? Geez.

Anyway... hate to tell you this but this guy IS STILL ACTING. He's appeared in about 20 movies in the past three years... most straight to dvd or tv movies. Some of these movies include The Poseidon Adventure (remade for tv), The DaVinci Treasure (rolling my eyes), War of the Worlds (made for tv), Mutant Vampire Zombies from the Hood (hahaha Vamp would love this one haha... so would you haha), War of the Worlds 2 (ugh)... and more. Hell, he even has six more movies in line for 2009 (cringing like I'm constipated haha). Ugh.

Sorry Crypt... but the guy is still around.
