I love M. Night. He is the most underrated director in Hollywood. Sixth Sense is legendary. Unbreakable is stunning. Signs is spooky. The Village is a political statement that few got. Lady in the Water is M. Night venting and making a story dear to him. Now there is the Happening. First it must be said that there are more studio fingers in this one then just about any movie I can think of. M. Night would have never made it R on his own. This movie shows all of M.'s strengths. Human emotion, cinematography, and that "I wonder" factor. There were a couple of death scenes that were over the top, but with studio hands in it that's expected. They wanted a big budget, scary movie. That's not M. Night he has ALWAYS been misadvertised. Most of his movies have been shown as scary almost horror movies. M. Night is a drama director. Plain and simple. The dead people, the comics, the aliens, the creatures, the Narpf, they are all precursors to the main event, the human element and if you get past that you expect a horror and watch it for the drama that it is. You will see it is a very very good movie. Can't wait for his next project.
