The Happening: Review By flink

I like M. Night Shyamalan's previous work, or a lot of it anyway, but this movie was awful.

Albeit a nice idea, you know, the environment getting revenge for all we've put it through, but it just didn't work. The story was easy enough to follow, I'll give it that, but it was confusing. It just didn't seem to make sense, and felt stupid as all hell. There's not much more I can say about the movie in general, it was rather hollow, so I suppose I'll move on to specifics..

The scenery was beautiful. The old farmhouse was a perfectly suiting location for the scenes it was in, as well as the rest of the scenery. I felt that the location scouts did their job, and they did them well. To bad it couldn't save the movie.

Shyamalan is certainly talented, and once again his directing wasn't completely awful, but again, it just wasn't enough to save it. And then the writing, oh God, the writing... 'nough said..

I'm not a big Mark Wahlberg fan. He wasn't good in the Italian Job, Max Payne, The Perfect Storm, Four Brothers... I could go on. But I did enjoy his performance in I Heart Huckabees, very unexpectedly. Needless to say, his performance in this movie once again didn't impress me, though by now I expect it.

But then... there's Zooey. On the top of my top 5 favourite actresses list, just the fact that she's in this movie, motivates me enough to actually buy it (granted, I won't spend more than $5). She got them all 3.5 starts for the acting.

So overall Shyamalan, you did a half-ass job, but I loved you once, so I love you still.
