The story of 'The Exorcist' is about a young girl less than 13 years old being possessed by evil. When her mother notices the swearing and violent actions her daughter is doing, she begins to worry more and more. While a priest's mother is dying in the hospital in Washington D.C and needs her son to be there for her. The mother of the possessed girl calls two priest (including the one with the sick mother) to find out what is wrong with her daughter.
With the movies special effects may not be as extraordinary as they are these days, but using these special effects to make this film freaky, surprising, and scary makes these special effects extraordinary. Like how the daughter walked down the stairs on her hands and feet, or the scene when everything flies around in the possessed girl's room, how the door slammed, turning her head backwards. When you watch these special effects, you will be surprised and shocked how scared and freaked out you'll be.
Not only will the special effects bring you reactions, but the make-up designing on a couple of the characters faces will scare the hell out of you. When you see one of the main characters faces, you will see what an amazing job these make-up designers did to make the face slowly wrinkle, scar, and turn ugly as the movie moves forward.
There is also another character that's only in this film for only less than ten seconds, but that's because this unknown character only pops up in on the screen in the dark of less than one second. This painted faced character is possibly one of the scariest things in the movie even though the fact it's hardly in the movie, it's so scary that you will not forget that face. Looking at the face will make you want to sleep with the lights on all because of that characters looks and look on its face.
'The Exorcist' isn't only scary with the characters, dialogue, and visual effects; it's also creative with those visual effects and dialogue making the script creative as well. Such as the scene when one of the priest tapes records the possessed girl's language and finds out what language really is after a translator listens to the tape. You'll be shocked and surprised, but also feel kind of stupid not realizing what the language it is. Funny how some movies do that.
'The Exorcist' is a smart, freaky, horror film, filled with twists, shocks, scares, creeps, and surprises that you will not expect to happen that isn't just one of the scariest movies of all time, but also one of the most creative, freaky, and, not the most shocking and surprising, but the most unexpected horror film released since Alfred Hitchc*ck's 'Psycho', and possibly the most unexpected horror ever made making this original and one of the best horror movies ever.
If you ask me that I think that this was better than 'Psycho', I'm going to say that 'Psycho' is a better horror film then this.
