Films can be popular it doesn't necessarily mean they are good by virtue of being popular, Titanic is as a prime example and lets not even start on those Twilight films. Films can also be unpopular and still be amazing, look at Fight Club. On release Fight Club bombed so badly it cost a top exec his job, yet it is now considered one of the best films of all time. I may be wrong on this score I fully accept that, but to me I just keep getting the feeling everybody got overtaken by the hype and the events leading up to the release. Are you going to sit back in ten years time, watch this film and go it's amazing? Or by that time are you going be caught up in the next round of hype/waffle.

Plus, @fallenlords said he's never read a batman comic, seen a tv cartoon episode, and generally has never been a Dark Knight fan. So OF COURSE you're gonna be biased against it! Idiot. Millions of people can't be wrong, with you being the only one that correctly "analyzed" the masterpiece of a film. Get away from the keyboard my friend.

I hate all these old-heads like @fallenlords who hate on new era movies that far surpass old ones. btw, the dude said he likes Fantastic Four over Batman!! Probably some 50 year old guy going through mid-life crisis.
I only tend to over-analyse a film when everybody is saying how great it was and I can't see what they are seeing. I thought this film lacked humour, I mean how serious are we suppose to take a hero dressed like a bat and a villain who look like a clown? Humour was present in the first film to a greater degree, which to me made it a better film. Likewise in the first Iron Man, once these films start to take themselves too seriously they tend to miss the mark. Joker having no motivation to do what he was doing made no sense at all, there had to be some motivation. Or the only other explanation was Joker is just insane.
@fallenlords Disagree, ledgers death did not make me like the film any more or any less. I think you look way too much into movies rather than for respecting it for what it is. Im not gonna lie I do it too sometimes, but compared to the other movies that came out around its time almost couldn't touch it except for Iron Man. The story was great, fight scenes were alright, but the sick sense of humor of the joker was awesome, not to mention is reason to destroy and watch the world fall apart (no reason at all) was amazing. And im sorry you dont think its a masterpiece but your not me or the other 500+ on this page.

This isn't a masterpiece or an epic film. There is nothing new or interesting about either the directing, acting or the film as a whole. If anything it's a mediocre action flick based on an already popular character (with a devout following). For a masterpiece/epic look to films like 'Lawrence of Arabia' - stunning visuals, moving score, amazing lead performance and a visionary director. That's a film that influenced the likes of Lucas, Spielberg and Scorsese. In terms of history the only thing The Dark Knight has going for it, is being the most over-hyped film in the history of cinema.

Ok so i just watch it again and it is a good movie made me change my rating from 3 to 4* but its still seriously overrated.

almost a masterpiece has some weak moments but its still a truly epic film.

i think you've gotta say that ledger was a pretty good actor (and his presence on the screen in any movie was phanominal ) but i was just saying "below" that he could have been given more character to play with, more insight to the joker,on how he became the joker like in the michael keaton batman movie where he starts out as a small time hood, even portrayed as the one who may have killed bruce wayne's parents. If the dark night is the first b.m. you see, you aren't gonna to know much at all about the joker character except what you imagine....please read my review ,it explains this. In this movie he basicly pops up out of nowhere like a jack in the box and goes on a rampage without rhyme or reason until batman puts him back in. Those of you that don't know what a jack in the box is ( a classic toy, a box u can hold in your hands, you turn the crank on the side until a clown pops out of the top with that clownish disturbing face that would scare the crap out of a young child. i don't see them around anymore, they were fading out when i was younger.) it's just true that they were going for an action packed movie.and people these days haven't cared much about story for a long time. i do like the fact that much of the stuff with the expolsions and car chases is real and not cgi. i rememeber seeing that new rambo movie and the blood looked cartoonish . i would rather see ketchup or that red looking fake blood (more fun) from the seveties than see cgi images. take a look at "death proof"dir. by Q. T.> ..real car chases! no that cgi crap.

Like I say hype - the death of Ledger was utilised as publicity for the film, it was spun something rotten. If Ledger had still been alive then people would of made natural comparisons with his portrayal. But as we never like to speak 'ill of the dead' what were the critics going to say? It's like standing up at a funeral and saying this bloke was no good which is something that just isn't done. Ledgers death was quite 'convenient' for the film all things considered, film was finished and in the editing stages when the death happened. That has to influence the final edit and I am not even sure we are even seeing the film that was originally imagined. While certain people had their heart in the right place, Depp and Co for example donating money to Ledgers daughter Matilda, I just saw the rest profiting from Ledgers death. What amazes me is that the majority of people fall for all the hype, but then it seems to work time and time again. It even works with me to an extent, but then a film has to deliver on it's promise. So far the majority of films that are over-hyped never deliver - this is one of those films.
"fallen lords" basicly replied below that the dark knight is over rated and i agree ,i do say it was an action romper stomper but far as the story goes, not that great, and believe it or not, ledger could have been better if character had been written better, ...see my review.
After watching Dexter and the Trinity killer, it's hard for me to imagine Batman with a better storyline.

@SpaceCowboy - He was just making a smart remark that she's not dead yet, so he couldn't have known her her whole life...probably more foreshadowing than sinister. I can see how it could be looked at in that dark way though....i think it's sorta' funny smart remark.
I've been in a DARK KNIGHT sorta phase lately and after watching it again I realized something kinda sickly dark about it (well, other than the obvious). Harvey Dent asks Alfred at Wayne's penthouse during his fundraiser "You've known Rachel her whole life." Alfred replies "Not yet, sir." And later in the movie Rachel Dawes...uhmmm, you know.

@fallenlords I thought so too, but it's not a bad movie.
Most over-hyped movie in the history of movies.
It's been nearly three years since I last saw it, but I finally rewatched THE DARK KNIGHT and I think I actually like it again. I can still point out all its flaws, but I think I can look past them now.
This movie was perhaps the best movie of 2008. It completely blew me away at the theaters. They need to make more movies like this.
