I think after the hyped died, I'm finding that the movie, while enjoyable, wasn't as "mind-blowing" as people claim it was when they first saw it in theaters. While Ledger, Bale and the rest of the cast serve up top notch performances, I'm really not sure this movie warrants any more repeat viewing than the original Batman movie does.

    Fun yes.

    Life/Genre changing? Not so sure...

  • Comic book films have become their own kind of genre. I don't really think any one comic book movie can "change" the genre, because the adaptation should be true to the source material, not influenced by another comic book movie. With that said, more and more people want "darker" comic book films since TDK was released, even for those that don't need to be darkened.

As for life changing, I really never thought it was THAT influential lol Anyone who says it changed their lives(unless they're an aspiring actor influenced by Ledger's performance) needs to rethink some things haha

However, I do think it was worth the hype and is still worth viewing. It's a great film, whether you're a comic book reader or just a film buff(more so if you're a comic book reader).

  • You also mentioned the original Batman movie(I'm assuming you mean the one with Keaton and Nicholson)...I would watch TDK a thousand more times before I watched Batman lol Not that Batman was bad...it's just inferior compared to TDK

  • IUH... i totally agree with you, on a couple of points. first i would like to address the forum, and i still think that the dark knight was an incredible film. Set in nolans world, it was after a few times watching on dvd felt that it still struck a nerve even though i was a big fan of the original two films, and felt that BB was a great revamp of the character, and thought it was a wise choice to start from the beginning. Set aside ledgers, well done performance of the joker, i thought the story was extremely well done. through out the film, on the first viewing it was interesting to see what agenda the joker really had. and it built up the relationships of bruce and the other characters as well. I personally felt although a "comic film" had many different elements that set it apart from many of the other comic films of today and yesteryear as well.

IUH, i agree with you that alot of fans, and filmakers are now expecting that alot of comic films need to be as dark as the dark knight was. the angst, the tone, the overall effect that the film left you with at the end, personally it felt like empire strikes back of the comic domain. but i agree that this is the type of film where others do not need to be. i remember them announcing the next superman would be much darker after the release of TDK, and personally superman could be filmed with a sense of hoplessness, and desperation, but even the comics, as much as i remember were not nearly as dark as the batman comics.

overall, i think the hype is gone, but i do think the film lives up to it being great cinema. i dont classify it as a comic book movie because it meshes so many film genres without being too over the top, or unbelievable.

  • I think the movie was worthy of the hype. Even now after many other movies have come and gone, the film is still awesome. One of my all time favs. Plus Health Ledgers performance at the joker was unbelievable. He really created something that will become a film icon.

  • The Dark Knight exceeded its own hype when released, and though it's not perfect I find that after having watched it several times I still find it so intriguing and incredibly deep that it's hard not to like just as much as when I saw it in theatres. The movie has many layers and I enjoy watching them unfold in all the tiny details. The hype may have been overblown but only mildly so and it is enduring despite.

  • "The Dark Knight" is one of the few films I've witnessed in the last decade that managed to live up to the hype. I mean, the last action movie I truly recall living up to the buzz was "The Matrix". When you take a good hard look, these two films are similar in many ways. They're both ground-breaking and despite some of the crummy sequels that came out of each franchise, both "The Matrix and "The Dark Knight" are rare motion picture treats that can be enjoyed over and over again.

  • @Chad Langen: The Dark Knight has no crummy sequels, the next Batman isn't even in production yet.

  • Yes, it was. And it will always have its cult following. So I definitely think it'll make it in movie history.

  • It was very good. The story alone is well structured and very solid. It weaves the inner plot with the external with ease and makes and statement about humanity in several occasions. The characters were well formed and acted. Unless you have no idea what you are talking about then you could trash talk this movie.

  • I try and most of the time succeed in not getting pissed at people who don't particularly like a flick. Though the majority they don't know what REALLY makes a good movies and what makes a bad one. Yes, opinion does come into the equation but the fundamentals of film making do not derive from opinions, so there is a basis of what makes a film good.
