i find it kinda sad the heath's last performance--magnificent as it may be, is of the joker. i know he was quoted as having fun doing it but i would rather have his last completed performance have been something more...human. that said, comic book movie hater that i am, i will be in line to see the dark knight--for bale as well as ledger. and, of course to see heath ledger's interpretation of the joker. nicholson prolly better move over!
I think they need to really work on the next script closely, ultimately they have to put a new Enemy into the mix while they work on a story line on how the Joker comes back.
In the Nolan Batman world I guess the most obvious choice would be that another character dons the Joker make-up and imitates him as a 'Copycat' - I agree that putting another actor in as a replacement just cannot work and will go against the 3rd movie.
But I think the the 3rd movie is gonna be about bringing Harvey Dent back from Two Face - can he come back? And that surely will throw the gates open for Scarecrow to come back in a larger role or most probably the new Villain: Ian Holm as the Mad Hatter anyone?
I've been thinking about another possible scenerio. what if the joker suddently dissapears from the plot...(depending on the resolution of TDK of course)then, he might come back as REDHOOD. he would have a total different attitude and appereance. another idea is let the joker aside(whatever CNolan wants to do) and focus on other villains that have been forgotten or poorly used from the whole batman films. there was a particular character, that is really attached to the excessive control of time (dont ask me its name please!). on the other hand, there is clayface, the riddler, killercroc, Mr Freeze!!. this is my humble opinion!
I was thinking and it would be really awkward to be an actor following in Heath's footsteps in the same Bat-series. Heath died for this character and he's already made it an icon without the movie being released. Getting a dif. actor would be like saying none of it mattered and the actor who had to relplace him would prolly feel uncomfortable.
they can't leave the joker out of da 3rd. have u seen depp play?? he was great as willie wonka, jack sparrow, in the secret window he was cool, and i loved him in sweeney todd, and sleepy hollow. but i say we completely replace the joker or just kill him off in the second one. like they said that two face might kill him in the end.
I dont think Johnny Depp should play the joker if the character is in the 3rd one. Personaly i'm not a fan of changing an actor with the character, like all the other batmans, idk how you could go from Keaton to kilmer to george i think that was dumb they should stick with one main person and that goes with the bad guys. Its a shame heath died because he would've been great for the 3rd. I think they should throw a twist to either kill off the joker or make his character avoid the future movies untill the perfect replacement comes along. Depp does not seem to dark to play the role and like AndrewRyan said carrey already did a role and it would be weird seeing him as the riddler(which i didn't like the movie i thought it was to gay) and the joker. What i'm trying to say is leave the role alone to heath cuz you dont want to mess up a good franchise
i agree with Joker2010. however it would be a bit cool to c johnny depp as the joker. he will be freakin crazy. but not as good as heath. he was born for this role and died for this role. now don't get mad but this is what i think. have you guys seen brad pitt in 12 monkeys. he was freaky. reminded me of Dennis hopper and Marlon Brando combined with jack Nicholson and of course brad Pitt. new should have a guy like that.
All awesome actors. All inspired me in different ways.... and yeah Carey was great in 23. But here's a fresh idea for ya.... How bout' none of the above. I think Nolan should pick some new, fresh talent this way the role of the Joker feels more authentic. As fans we won't associate the new actor playing the Joker with previous roles. Nor would hollywood rock the boat if they happened to choose one famous actor over another. As long as the person stepping in to play Heath's joker looks, moves, acts, sounds, and laughs like Heath you're golden... plus someone around Heath's age would be nicer than say a 50 y.o. Daniel-Day. And so far as a an avid Batman/Joker fan I can imagine only one actor who possesses all those qualities..... anyone care to take a guess as to whom I'm talking about?
wow cool clip wish it had better qualiy though johny deep may pull of a good joker but i thinghk jim carry woul be the best comical joker if you know what i mean but the best evil joker would have to be john cusack because we have the same first name haha but serisuly it would be vigo morston
I can't think of anyone who could replace Heath in this. Whoever they pick (if they do) I hope it's someone decent. I thought Christian Slater had a good voice for it. And the look. But he'd look more like the old joker (Nicholson). And I don't think he'd pull it off (acting wise) :( It's an idea though.
i really hope i ont get shot for this one...but when i was watching the number 23 the other day, the part where Jim Carey kills his girlfriend and walks out of the hotel when he is outside walking in the darkness he freakishly had a very simular look to Ledgers Joker. I would be worried about him taking the role tho because he would try to make it comedic. but he looked the part there
Heath Ledger did a great job performing the joker. It's a shame he just passed away. Nevertheless, if C.Nolan considers another actor for playing the joker I can easily see Hugo Weaving on it. Have you ever seen Alex Rose's Joker? just compare them!. Perfect match!. both are australians(Ledger-Weaving). both are well-known actors!. Weaving as done great roles as a villain( Agent Smith, V ). on the other hand, there is Johnny Deep. he would be a terrific one as well!. every single character he has selected is as complex and dark as the Joker. He wouldn't have any issue performing it.
I wonder if they changed the ending of The Dark Knight because of Heath Ledger passing... I think we need to say goodbye to the Joker for a while unless they come up with a clever way to bring him back later. Heath f*cking nailed this role from what I have seen and I cannot imagine anyone else stepping in as the Joker at least for now.
Its going to be a tough choice who would or could replace Heath, out of respect they might not even have the joker in the next film. But you can't have batman with out the joker.
If they bring the Joker back for the 3rd film i really hope Nolan will push for Johnny Depp to play the Joker. He is the best choice to replace Heath and thats gonna very hard to do.
agreed. i really wish he could do the sequel. But the reason they didnt do a reincarnation of R'as Al Ghul is because they are going after a die hard realism and its not possible to reincarnate someone in real life. so his way of doing it was that when one R'as Al Ghul dies another takes over. Very cool way to keep R'as around in a realistic fashion, dont you think. But everythign else i definitely agree with. But i was a Ledger fan before he was cast as the Joker. I knew he would be great
I had never been a huge Ledger fan, although I loved him in The Order, a film vastly underrated, and you should see his performance in Brokeback. It is heartbreakingly sublime. You would never have guessed that this man was an Australian, a testament to how deeply he got into his roles.
I didn't know what the heck I was watching when I went to the Imax theatre to see Legend. Clowns terrify many people, and these clowns were horrifying. I honestly thought that I was seeing a short film spoofing Heat (the first robbery is done with strange masks and is messed up by a psycho the crew picked up as a freelance, Waingro, who later works for the bank guy with the shotgun in this preview). Even when the clown removed his mask, I did not know it was Ledger. Not until they showed Batman on the building did I put it together and later told a friend who actually went to the movie not to see Legend as to see the preview.
This film will not be viewed as just another batman film. From what I've seen, it will be one of the best of the year. I only wish Ledger was around to do more.
I remember the summer of 2005, and how everyone was just going freeking bonkers for Episode 3. Then there was that movie on the backburner, the little film that could, which just blew (in my honest opinion) Revenge of the Sith out of the water. In fact every time I saw it in the theatre, everyone clapped and cheered maniacally when the movie was done. It was that film from Christopher Nolan, and now he's making a sequel? YES! See, what I like about this director is his intuition on who he chooses to play the roles in his movies, nameably his Batman films.
I mean, look at Oldman and his role as the Sgt. and soon the be Commissioner in upcoming Dark Knight. We all know him for his intensity, and yet he still managed to play the role of a humble, good cop quite handsomely. Liam Neeson, jedi knight gone evil ninja. He reminded me of a Count Dooku (psychic vampire-loves to get into your head/mentor type) cept with a katana instead of those long bright hot things that go "whooomp" at every swing. Holmes as Rachel Dawes, organic-girl-next-door-type gone hot shot lawyer. 28 days later Cillian Murphy was pretty good. For his role as the Scarecrow, I was honestly more into his fashion sense than his character. "Wanna see my mask?" Watch out for that metrosexual head-doctor with the weaponized gas! The eloquent, charming Micheal Cain, of course was more than suitable as Alfred. Being Bruce's voice of reason and the man who constantly reminds his master to rightfully uphold the Wayne household and name. And Morgan Freeman. Yes! Seems any role this guy touches has that signature glow, from Muslim all the way to G-O-D. Screw it, this guy is God!
Took a little while for me to get used to the way Bale growled as Batman, but remembering him as that rich, pretentious wall street yuppie (him being tall and with a college rugby physique was also made it work) in American Psycho really made him look even more slick as Bruce Wayne. Though I personally think, the birthday-scene, where the League of Shadows visits Wayne in the mansion, they should've casted that other tall bald asian dude (they show a quick shot of him by the stairs) as the reincarnated Ra's Al-Ghul, instead of the other guy. *Shrugs*
Now (the late, RIP) Ledger as the Joker, I'm sorry to say, I, like many, had my doubts at first. Serious doubts. Your prolly all hating me for saying that, but its true. I've seen many of his movies cept Brokeback Mountain (Sorry no real interest in seeing it, though it's funny how Ledger has those moments with both (brother and sister) Gyllenhaals on the big screen). Thats until I saw the 2 minute trailer and the bootleg IMAX exclusive upstairs. Like everyone on this board, fans of the film, EVERYONE, I literally just popped (not pooped, popped! and a good one too) in me-undies. Seriously. He truly looks and sounds terrifying, and I love every minute of what I saw. Like Nolan said, "Ledger is Fearless!". As one of you pointed out, he probably would've wanted for all of us to see and enjoy him as the spooky clown who believes "Whatever doesn't kill you, simply makes you...stranger". Lets celebrate his efforts and and endless hours he put into his role as the Joker.
Heath Ledger has somewhat become a martyr, an unsung hero of the industry. So despite your long-sleepless nights, now its time to be at peace, so rest brother.
Ledger quotes, "I'm not going for the same thing he (Jack Nicholson) went for. That would be stupid. It is also two very different directors with different styles. Tim Burton did a more fantastical kind of thing and Chris Nolan is doing nitty gritty handheld realism."
Like I mentioned earlier, I really give credit to Nolan for having that talent of sniffing out the actors (who in everyones eye, we would never expect) that just nail their character on the dot, and leave us with that lasting impression.
yeah i have to agree. i think it is definitely going to be the biggest money maker of the year. no doubt there. i cant wait for it to come out. we all know that Ledger has nailed his role
I just read an interview with Nolan in which he credits the film Heat for inspiring his take on dark knight. Heat--DeNiro, Val Kilmer in the gang--Pacino, the detective--is one of my favorite crime action films. Very intense. This movie will not only be best batman film, but probably one of the best films of the year. If Ledger had lived, he would have been playing the Joker like Damon plays Jason Bourne. Perhaps they would have even brought in Harley Quinn.
this movie will definitely be the best Batman film anyone has ever seen. Heath has nailed the Joker, and we know from Batman Begins just how awesome Bale is as Batman. The Dark Knight is going to rock!
the joker is knwn to be very intelligent. infact top of the charts intelligent in the comics. So no surprise that he was able to plan a perfect crime like tht to me. heath has done a tremendous job with this role. Its shame he wont be able to reprise his role.
i think it is a great film and changes the idea of what you thought about batman from the 90's films they ruined batman and made batman movie for chldren and a joke ther was no basic info or how the start happened or anything now with this amazing director he shows the begginig and changes what you think of batman made it a really exciting movie it comes out seven months from now and i cant waite to see heaths joker and now batman is going to be remeberd a bieng part of an amazing film that is for all ages and not just a goofy movie like the old ones from the 90's and theese movies will become legendary in the future for the excellent cast and plot that makes you want to see this movie so badly and i wish that they would have put up the rest of the film or they should have came out with the movie earlier and i know when i see this one i will get so excited for he next one and the villians in it i cant waite to see the ridler, penguin, 2 face, poison ivy , baine, catwoman,mr freeze and i cant waite to see who will play them and especaly robin reading this will probably remind you of the greatness of batman and how much you like him and will excite you to see the new ones in the future
Remember the first armored car robbery in Heat, when the guys put on their masks? The robbery went haywire because they had picked up a 5th man, Wayne Groh--who was a nut, a sociopath. In fact, the bank officer in this short played a crooked investor in that movie. And this robbery is scored in much the same way the big bank robbery in Heat was scored (the pulsating percussive tones) and scripted similarly: "Get down!"
I had no idea what I was looking at when I went to see Legend on Imax. I thought it was some sick spoof of Heat. When my son told me afterwards that Heath Ledger was playig the Joker--I couldn't believe it. This disturbing short looks nothing like it did on a giant screen.

i think it is a great film and changes the idea of what you thought about batman from the 90's films they ruined batman and made batman movie for chldren and a joke ther was no basic info or how the start happened or anything now with this amazing director he shows the begginig and changes what you think of batman made it a really exciting movie it comes out seven months from now and i cant waite to see heaths joker and now batman is going to be remeberd a bieng part of an amazing film that is for all ages and not just a goofy movie like the old ones from the 90's and theese movies will become legendary in the future for the excellent cast and plot that makes you want to see this movie so badly and i wish that they would have put up the rest of the film or they should have came out with the movie earlier and i know when i see this one i will get so excited for he next one and the villians in it i cant waite to see the ridler, penguin, 2 face, poison ivy , baine, catwoman,mr freeze and i cant waite to see who will play them and especaly robin reading this will probably remind you of the greatness of batman and how much you like him and will excite you to see the new ones in the future
